These fundamental ideas lie beneath much of the current discussion on particular aspects of the practices and also contribute to the wider academic debate over the globalization and appropriation of religious traditions.

Hesychasm on the world stage

This is a welcome text, as an academic consideration of hesychasm (rather than another devotional work) is probably a little overdue. Johnson gives a balanced overview of the place of hesychasm in the modern religious scene. His focus is on how these practices are appropriated outside their original context within Eastern Orthodox monasticism, and the tensions between the defined authority of traditional spiritual elders and the more diffuse and individualistic practice that has resulted from the dissemination of texts such as the Philokalia. As someone who first came to hear of hesychasm through the translated Philokalia it was fascinating to discover myself as part of a religious phenomenon, and to be challenged as to whether my interest is appropriate or intrusive. This is an excellent survey both of the place of hesychasm in the modern world and of the spiritual milieu of our global culture.

Blacks in the Dutch World examines the interaction between Black history and Dutch history to gain an understanding of the development of racial attitudes. Allison Blakely reveals cracks in the self-image and reputation of Dutch society as a haven for those escaping intolerance. Pervasive images of "the Moor" and "the noble savage" appear in Dutch art and popular culture; and "Black Pete" is a servant to Santa Claus in Dutch Christmas tradition. These and many other cultural artifacts reflect the racial stereotyping of Blacks that existed in the Dutch world through the time of slavery and servitude, and then freedom.

Blakely weighs the proposition that factors unique to the modern period have contributed to the creation of this racial imagery in Dutch folklore, art, literature, and religion. By viewing evolving images of Blacks against the backdrop of Western expansion, the agricultural, scientific, and industrial revolutions, and the advent of modern secular doctrines, Blakely discovers that humanism and liberalism, hallmarks of Dutch society since medieval times, have been imperfect guardians against racial bias.

In the early pages, death is quick and no-nonsense: fly, beetle, frog, and snake are easily devoured by larger predators. Once the furry animals appear, however, the author is more circumspect; the owl merely dives for the skunk, and the coyote stalks the raccoon. Above it all, Anna hears the howl of a coyote and looks out her window, subtly reinforcing humanity's place at the top of the hierarchy. Vitale's rich, colorful oil-on-wood illustrations are as poetic as the text in their depiction of the natural world. This is a gorgeous, vibrant book about a pond food chain! Do you know who-eats-what in Anna's pond?!

The dark pond had a slight ripple across the surface, reflecting the windows of Anna's house. The pond's "jade green algae" speckled the water and a mayfly nymph nibbled some next to a lily pad at the surface. Suddenly a diving beetle gave chase to the nymph who was unable to escape even when he quickly dove down under the water. Underneath the surface of the pond the lustrous colors of the plants and the water were beautiful. The diving beetle was spotted by a "loud bullfrog" and the chase was on. The beetle would be a great snack for him. In the animal kingdom there are many species below the tertiary predator, but in the scheme of things even a bullfrog was quite low down on the chain!

"This is the snake
the garter snake
that swallowed the frog
that gobbled the beetle
that ate the nymph
that nibbled the algae
that grew in the water
that filled the pond
by Anna's house."

I thoroughly enjoyed the storybook format of a pond food chain adventure. It is a great way to introduce children to ecology. The rhythmical text was a lot of fun and reminded me a lot of the song "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" because the text is repetitive and cumulative. Anyone who is musical could easily strum or play a simple melody and sing the lyrics to their children or young students. The full page artwork is vibrant and creates a little aura of mystique and mystery . . . what will that critter eat? In the back of the book is a section of "facts to pond-er" that discusses the creatures in this food chain (algae, mayfly nymph, predaceous diving beetle, bullfrog, giant garter snake, striped skunk, great horned own, raccoon and the coyote). If you are looking for an introductory food chain who-eats-what picture book, this should be your book of choice!

Knowing how essential it is that young people become aware of the interdependence of species in a natural system -- and the importance of each link in that system -- I am incredibly excited about Betsy Franco's simple, lyrical, beautiful, lively, exceptionally fun, cumulative-tale-of-a-picture book that is POND CIRCLE. This is a book that shows young readers how a neighborhood ecosystem begins with the algae in the pond and works its way up to the howling, prowling coyote:

"This is the coyote/out in the dark/that stalked the raccoon/the hungry raccoon/that stole the eggs/of the great horned owl/that dived for the skunk/the shy striped skunk/that caught the snake/the garter snake/that swallowed the frog/the loud bullfrog/that gobbled the beetle/the diving beetle/that ate the nymph/the mayfly nymph/that nibbled the algae/the jade green algae/that grew in the water/ the deep, still water/that filled the pond/by Anna's house."

But what makes POND CIRCLE a truly memorable picture book are Stefano Vitale's paintings depicting the circle of life in and about that pond.

I still clearly recall, a dozen years ago as Children's Buyer, first examining Vitale's re-illustration of Charlotte Zolotow's WHEN THE WIND STOPS. Vitale has an extremely distinctive style in which he uses oils on plywood in a manner that the grain is often still visible through the paint. Over the years I've been in love with so many of his covers and his picture books, but this is his best work yet. The flying-in-your-face horned owl, caught-in-the-act raccoon, and big-attitude coyote are absolute characters! From the first two-page spread -- where Vitale utilizes the wavering, concentric curves in the grain as ripples in the pond that, in turn, reflect Anna's house in the water -- to the final spreads where the grains are transformed into moon-lit striated clouds, POND CIRCLE is a stunning work of art that will have young readers howling with delight.

"I am the girl/who heard the coyote/looked up from her book/leaned out the window/ and howled back/"Hello, hello,/hello, out there,'"

It is so fulfilling to see that there are places like the Hudson River where there is real progress being made on healing the grievous damage done to Mother Earth. POND CIRCLE is one of those great picture book stories that can help foster a new generation of budding environmentalists to continue that healing.

The circle of life

Written in the cumulative style of "This is the house that Jack built", this gorgeously-illustrated (by Stefano Vitale) picture book tells the story of the circle of life as it unfolds in a little pond. Author Betsy Franco's prose unfolds in a rhythmic and soothing fashion, lulling readers and listeners alike into a state of calm as the circle of life begins with the green algae, that gets consumed by the mayfly nymph, that gets eaten by the diving beetle, that gets gobbled by the bullfrog, and so it goes on and on.

The illustrations are not only beautiful, but painted in vivid colors, engaging my preschooler's attention, and delighting us both with the rhythmic, flowing prose. This picture book would be great for teaching children about the ecosystem in a pond and is perfect for reading aloud. Highly recommended!

Apparently Bach may very well have been a cantankerous fellow according to this author. Nevertheless, Bach's music is still my favorite. The author also mentions that not all of Bach's music is excellent and at the genius level, some is humdrum in his opinion.

Whatever You Do is book two in Try again series by Stephanie Smith. Well Stephanie grabs you pulls you into the book. It is sweet, sexy and very passionate. The characters are unique and they become a part of you.

We meet Brook and Saxon in book one, which was an emotional story about loss, grief, and letting the past go and learning how to love again. In addition, they are going strong in this book.

Harper worked at Argo the company that Brook and Saxon use to own as a receptionist. She is fired from her job and decides to go to her boyfriend’s apartment since it was close by when she gets there she is in for a shock he is in bed with someone else. She is upset and does not want to go home so she goes and visits Brook who offers her a job and she accepts.

Harper then decides to try on line dating since all the men she meets or dates just wants to sleep with her and everyone else. She meets her first two dates at a Cafe where she runs into Tate. She thinks Tate is a player and just like all the guys, she dated before.

Will Harper find a keeper instead of a player? Is Tate an actual player?

Tate Washington is a sexy tattooed man that was not looking to meet anyone. He was still dealing with the consequences of his one serious relationship; all he’s interested in is revamping his family’s behind-the-times café. He never thought he would see the beautiful secretary he nicknamed Daisy, but then she walked into his life again to use his café for her dates from her on line dating.

Can he convince her to go out with him and maybe have a life with him?

I know that Harper was hurt in the past and had trust issues but sometimes I just wanted to pull her hair out and scream at her she is a very Independent and strong willed woman who just needed to take a breather and see what was right in front of her.

I highly recommend this book but please read the first one in this series so you will be caught up on all the characters.

thoughts on whatever you do

This had some hysterical moments. Each date that Harper had were so funny they will have you crying from laughing so hard. the one good one was when she finally realizes Tate is what she wants even after fighting it completely.

Tate is the sweet kind guy who didn’t deserve to be judged the way Harper did. this was the one thing about Harper that got to me-she judged Tate based on her past relationships and than continued to do so even after they got together. She never quite trusted him. Never quite thought he was true to his word and loved her. She almost ruins a good thing for her pride and wanting to be stuck in her past. Tate never gave her a reason not to believe in him. Harper for half the book is what she claims she isn’t-she is judging Tate without giving him a chance and justifying it because of her past experiences saying he is just like the others.

You feel for Tate because he sits there and watches Harper continuously go on these horrible dates and supporting her along the way. Even after he thinks she finally will give him a chance she goes on a date and that hurts Tate but he being the kind and sweet guy he is understands due to her past and accepts what she did. Even after instead of listening to him as to why he was having lunch with a woman she ran away he waited for her and explained. Even after she did what she did at the end he understood. This is a sweet understanding guy. harper in some ways deserved him but others not because of how she continuously lumped him with her past.

This is the story of harper letting go of the past and finding love.

A fun sweet romance that will have you laughing at her online date meets, smiling at tate and his romantic and sweet understanding ways.

Bad Luck

If you were to look up the definition of BAD LUCK in the dictionary, next to it you would find a picture of Harper. She's got a rock chick type of vibe to her from her short black bob to her eccentric, yet fashionable clothing choices. Harper is fiercely loyal to her friends and loved ones, but she's also pretty sensitive. And she has the worst luck ever.

In the beginning of Whatever You Do, I did get a little confused. We went from her working with her closest friends at a company that her friend owned to the next chapter her getting fired from said company by someone else. It is all eventually explained, but I think it should have been done in the beginning.
Now let me get to the mysterious yet sinful Tate. We meet him in the very beginning when he delivers lunch to Harper and her friends. He's immediately drawn to her. He's very flirtatious and ca come across as a playboy, but once you get to know him, he'll win you over with his endless charm and boyish good looks.
Both he and Harper have been hurt in the past and try to keep themselves guarded. Tate wants nothing more than for Harper to give him a chance, but she's reluctant. After a series of horrible online dating attempts, she finally relents, hoping this isn't something that will ruin the great friendship that has formed.
I loved this story once I got past the beginning. Some of these guys that Harper went on dates with truly just amazed me. They were horrible. Once she gave Tate a chance, she realized what she was missing. I just hate that it was so hard for her to trust him. I know her past would make anyone a little jaded, but sometimes you just have to take life by the horns and hold on.
All in all, I loved the chemistry between them and how he wasn't willing to take no for an answer and let her get away. This is truly a romance that will have you smiling and happy that these two were happy and willing to give love another chance.

Not only for Horror Fiction Addicts.

I was never a big fan of the horror fiction genre but I had to read Manish's book as I have been following his writing online for many years. Manish's writing leans more towards the surreal rather than the gore which I see in lot of horror fiction nowadays. I loved his descriptions of India and his characters. Had a distinct RK Narayan flavor there. I absolutely loved it and I definitely had tons of goosebumps after I finished. Will re read it again, once I start feeling a tad bit braver.

Small Bundle of Packaged Horror

Manish has used the typical Indian horror stereotypes in his stories in a nice manner. The plot ranges from ghostly trees to dead people to ancient spirits to plain scary people, from haunted houses to haunted railway stations, from strange photographs to stranger amusement parks (which wont amuse. There is a nice quality to the stories which I couldn’t really put my finger on but enjoyed nevertheless. Manish has even managed to inject some nice humor in the ‘horror’ stories. Manish Sharma has been able to weave stories in a manner which hold your attention and grip you.

My personal favorite is ‘Her Unkempt Promise’ where the short stories of an author begin to come true. My other favorite is ’13, Church Street’ because it has the ghosts with the touch of humor when it is least expected.

12 stories spanning 70 off pages are a good two hours worth of nice reading. The author advises the reader to read the stories in the solitude of the night. Do it at your own risk (of gaining more ‘pleasure’ out of the book).

This book is a collection of 12 short stories with some amount of paranormal touch. 12 stories told through 60 odd pages leaves very little scope for me to tell you about each story without giving out some spoiler. So instead of reviewing each story separately, I will review the book as a whole. And frankly, when I accepted this book for review I had no idea about what to expect from it. Ofcourse, ghosts of some sort would be part of each story – but what else? Would it be like Ahaat, the old TV series that always had me in splits or would it be more like Conjuring, the recent movie that everyone seems to swear as ‘really scary’? Would it be Stephen King material, that’s guaranteed to be freaky or more like Goosebumps series, that did give me goosebumps as a child but now I find it merely entertaining.

This book stands apart from all of the above mentioned books. For starters, the author has limited his story telling to a couple of pages and that I find a great constraint. How can you introduce and develop characters, set up the environment and then tell a story within those few pages? Well, an author attempting at short stories has to be a master of words to be and an outstanding story teller to able to be able to accomplish this else it would just leave the readers unsatisfied. Manish Mahajan has indeed mastered this art. His language and narration style has no flaws and each story ends on a satisfactory note. Not all of the stories are scary. Some are ironic and some are simply tragic, yet all of them have that eerie feeling you look for in a horror story. Each story is different from the other guaranteeing that the reader will find something to like. My personal favourites were The Secret in the Photograph, Raag Bhimpalasi and Her Unkept Promise.

This book will hardly take a couple of hours of your time, but it will be time well spent and Manish Mahajan is surely an author to watch out for! Get your copy Now!
