Dark Matter: A Novel, by Blake Crouch

A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy

-
“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of July 2016: Blake Crouch is back with a science-fiction thriller that is fantastically terrifying. His story of Jason Dessen, an instantly relatable husband and father, quickly sucks you in as you follow him to an innocent evening at a local bar where circumstances abruptly shift and Jason begins a battle to make sense of a series of mind-bending realities that provoke past fears, both realized and unknown. Dark Matter will not just hold your attention cover to cover, but will continue to confront you far past the last sentence. --Penny Mann, The Amazon Book Review

From Publishers Weekly
Excellent characterization and well-crafted tension do much to redeem the outlandish plot of this SF thriller from Crouch (the Wayward Pines trilogy). Jason Dessen, a quantum physicist, once had a brilliant research career ahead of him. But after a girlfriend’s unexpected pregnancy and the birth of a son, this future was derailed. Now Jason is a professor at a small Chicago college, content with his warm and loving family life until he’s abducted into a world in which his quantum many-worlds theory has become a fully realized technology for inter-dimensional transfer. In this world, Jason didn’t marry his girlfriend and never had a son. Jason is determined to get back to his family and his own world, but nefarious powers in the alternate reality conspire to stop him from revealing the criminal lengths they have gone to create the world-hopping technology. Crouch makes little attempt to justify the underlying science fiction MacGuffin, but a rousing and heartfelt ending will leave readers cheering. Agent: David Hale Smith, Inkwell Management. (July)\n

"What might have been and what has been point to one end, which is always present"
By Benjamin T. Payne
I've always been afraid of the multiverse theory. Until I read Dark Matter.

Before I read this story, I found it terrifying to know that there may very well be an infinite number of alternate me's on an infinite number of alternate universes.

After having read this story, I now appreciate this me and this world more than I ever have. I'm unapologetic about who I am, and who I am not.

This isn't a story about time travel, although it has some of the trappings of one: a futuristic teleportational device, and a disenchanted main character obsessed with what would have been.

Rather than traveling to the past or the future, Jason Dessen opens the door—literally—to the present. Alternate presents, in alternate Chicagos, from alternate universes.

Throughout the second half of the story, Jason tries to return home, after having been abducted and thrown into an alternate universe.

It's the universe he's always dreamed of. The one where he's an internationally renown quantum physicist. The one where he's the boss of his own company. The one where he's reached his fullest potential as a scientist.

But it's also the one where he never got married to the love of his life. It's the one where he never had his one and only son. It's the one where he has no family.

It's this universe that Jason attempts to find—through grueling trial and error.

I can't give anything more away without ruining the story for future readers, but I can give you what I believe to be the moral of the story: live in the present moment, because that is where your true identity lies.

The second quarter of the book lags, with Jason evading capture more times than necessary to advance the plot. (Twice he narrowly escapes through a bathroom. One lavatory getaway is plenty.)

I give Dark Matter 40 Jason Dessens out of 50. Read the book, and you'll understand my rating system.

Interesting concept but it was just ok
By Crank
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book. I couldn't put it down. As it approached the middle and the end I kept reading but just to get through it. I was hoping for some great ending with some big twist I couldn't predict but I unfortunately was disappointed. I would go into more detail but I do not want to give anything away. I think the idea has promise but in the end it was too difficult to put on paper and the ending was forced.

I'm not saying it isn't good. It is a fine book
By Darwin8u
"I suppose we're both just trying to come to terms with how horrifying infinity really is."
-- Blake Crouch, Dark Matter

On the back of this book is a blurb by Lee Child where he says: "Brilliant. A book to remember. I think Blake Crouch just invented something new."

Then problem here is this book isn't new. I'm not saying it isn't good. It is a fine book. It is a screenwriter writing a book about science. We get line or two about the multiverse, some thoughts about game theory. The narrator talks with vague, and broad-strokes about Schrödinger's cat, the Copenhagen interpretation, the multiverse, and even a bit of quantum entanglement. But beyond the superficial use of quantum mechanics this novel seems all slickness with no soul.

Too me it is a degraded copy of a better book. The better, more literary version of this book was written by Stephen Peck and is called A Short Stay in Hell. Steven Peck is a scientist (Professor of biomathematics and entomology). Peck's novel is more literally, scary, and came out about four years. I should be clear here. I'm not saying Crouch ripped Peck off. There are many ways to use infinity and the desire to return home in a SF novel. I'm just saying that Dark Matter, for me, was the dead cat of the two in the box.

It seemed too Hollywood. Too made to be optioned. I am sure (as sure as Crouch's film and TV manager and entertainment attorney) that it will be made into a movie. Perhaps, Tom Hanks will star in it. It just isn't a great book. When it gets made into a movie, I'll shell out the $12 to see it, I just think Peck's novel was better, more philosophical, had a better grasp of the fundamental science of large numbers, and didn't sell out the end to a pitch-packaged, happy ending.

I'd love someone else to read both and tell me I was wrong, but I don't think so. I've opened both doors, experienced both worlds. The differences are as glaring as the difference between a house and a home. One was SF beauty, this was just a cold, slick, uncanny valley. I know I'm in the minority here. Most of my Goodreads friends who have read this loved it. I don't know. It just seemed too predictable, too soft, too secure in its protagonist. History, and I guess in multiverse fiction too, gets written by the winner. I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather have read a book written by Jason2, 3, 4 or 70."

Broken Souls- Book 2 in the Unfortunate Souls Series

I finally cracked Guy Stone’s tough-guy exterior, revealing a kind and tortured soul akin to my own. But just as I found myself falling for the stone-cold Captain was when our journey came to a close, ripping us apart as fast as we’d first met. I was taken to the City of Unfortunate Souls and, amongst an assortment of underworld creatures, I was to be integrated with others like me; vampires. But my hope for finally fitting in came to a screeching halt when suspicions arose of my intentions and I was taken prisoner in the old ghost town, my only wish being that Guy Stone was somewhere out there in the human world safe from harm, and that I might live another day so I could see him again.

If someone had told me only a few short weeks ago I’d fall for the likes of a vampire -me being the brutal hunter of Unfortunates as I was- I’d have laughed in their face. But despite my previous disposition, it had happened, and I was falling in love with teenage-vampire Ruby Carter. My bond to her was what made it so hard to let her go, but I knew there was no other choice, that she needed to be with her own kind. Yet, just when I thought I could go back to life as usual, I was captured and taken to Tombstone, AZ, The City of Unfortunate Souls, to await my sentencing and, more than likely, my execution. I could only pray that Ruby was safe and could go on happy without me, living the life of greatness she was destined to fulfil.

*This book is recommended for ages 14 and up due to a little bit of kissing, cursing, and mild violence.

Great second installment
By Bobby K Reeves
Book two in the Unfortunate Souls series picks up where book one left off- with a cliffhanger. Guy Stone, the hunter of Unfortunate Souls, has fallen in love with the newborn teenage vampire that he saved, Ruby Carter. Not only has he fallen for her, he bonded to her when she saved his life. Despite his love for her, he did what he thought was best for her and took her to Tombstone to integrate with her own kind. Unfortunately, suspicions arose upon her arrival and Ruby was imprisoned. Her hope was that Guy got away safely. Her hope was for nothing, though, because Guy was attacked as he was leaving and was also imprisoned in Tombstone, as well, unbeknownst to Ruby. He is facing sure execution, now. How will the unlikely pair make it out of this situation alive?
I enjoyed this book as much as, if not more than, the first book in this series (Unfortunate Souls). The world building and character development got even better in this second installment, in my opinion. This story is different than the normal “vampire story”, and I really appreciate this take on the genre fiction. I think that fans of this genre will really enjoy this series.

Teen urban paranormal dystopian romance
By Convoke
Broken Souls (Book 2) City of Unfortunate Unfortunate Souls series, by Jade M. Phillips isn't the sort of book I normally read, but I was at a friend's and she and she had it on her Kindle. I started reading it there and couldn't stop. Before I knew it, I'd read the entire book.

This story flies by at the speed of light. It is a vampire book for those fourteen and up, cautions the author, because of mild kissing and cursing, so author Jade M. Phillips reminds us.

I really should have read Book ! first, I have a suspicion, although I never for a moment lost my place. Be that as it may, here's a taste that won't spoil your fun:

"If someone had told me only a few short weeks ago I’d fall for the likes of a vampire - me being the brutal hunter of Unfortunates as I was - I’d have laughed in their face.
"...,just when I thought I could go back to life as usual, I was captured and taken to Tombstone, AZ, The City of Unfortunate Souls."

This book is a quick read, a look into a different sort of story than you might expect, but is definitely a paranormal dystopian urban romance with some teen/young adult cautions, written by someone with a flair for these tropes and mixed genres.

If I were a teen or young adult, I'd grab this immediately and run off to read it, and then get the others in this series.

Somewhere out there in the human world safe from harm, and that I might live another day so I could see him again.

Required for class. Normal textbook.
By Hannah Horspool
Required textbook for class. I really disliked doing the quizzes and reading assignments from it. Concepts: awesome. Design: could be improved. The amount of growth and development in infancy is incredible, but this textbook is not extremely engaging.
