I'm not a doctor. But this book saved my wife. Book is out of print. But you can get used copies here for about 10 bucks.

Excellent book. Even if it's an old one. I used this book to find out my wife had been suffering from RA Rheumatoid Arthritis that all along had been caused by food allergies. I could not believe it. You probably dont believe it either and if I was you, (and I was at one time) I wouldnt believe it either. Specially when all the doctors tell you it it not true. My wife used this book and found out she was deathly allergic to: green peppers, broccoli, peanuts and a couple of other things. When she was able to close her mouth, (and mine, from the surprise) she had no more pain. The doctors said it was "spontaneous remission". They were wrong. It was the chemicals (natural ones) in the food that were causing an auto immune reaction. (read the book for more info). I promised her I would always tell the story. You got joint pain and don't know why and all the doctors can do is give you heavy duty meds that are expensive and destroy your stomach and intestines? Then read and try the book. It takes a couple of weeks to do it. Worse that can happen is, WHO KNOWS! (maybe you die? Maybe you get better? I'm not a doctor just a happy guy that saw how the process worked on my wife.) The book does not tell you to take any medicines or anything. It eliminates probably causes of joint inflammation by trial and error. It takes 7 days to find out if it works. Less than 10 bucks too much to pay for a possible alternative to costly autoimmune suppressant meds?

excellent guide to treat arthritis and other ailments

I have read the book and applied elimination diet and discovered I am allergic to dairy. Thanks to this book I do not have to take medicine and have no more pain. I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Howard Phillips "H. P." Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now widely seen as one of the most significant 20th century authors in his genre.

Be Certain you Get the 2011 Corrected Edition with its Purple book ribbon!!!

This is a great collection that contains every single story that H. P. Lovecraft wrote by himself. Each story has a wee note by esteemed editor, S. T. Joshi, concerning the story. The first edition, which sold for $12.95, was riddled with hundreds of typographical errors; you can tell if you have that edition because it has a gold book ribbon and gold gilt on the edge of its pages. The 2011 edition has almost all of the typos corrected; it has a purple book ribbon and silver gilt on its pages, and that is the edition you want. The problem with ordering the book here at Amazon is that you have no idea what edition they will send you as you cannot inspect the book yourself. But it is a great book, and includes rare items such as "A History of the Necronomicon," plus it has lovely end papers and a sewn-in book ribbon. Here are the complete contents:

Supernatural Horror in Literature

One of the outstanding features here seen is that the tales are published in chronological order, as it is interesting to see what things came first, what inspired other stories, &c. Here we find the stories that Lovecraft wrote during his two-year exile in New York ("Under the Pyramids" was written just before his marriage, and the MS was lost at the train station, and so he had to retype the MS during his honeymoon) and then we see the surge of amazing creativity that Lovecraft experienced upon returning home to Providence, a time during which he penned "The Call of Cthulhu" and his two (unpublished during his lifetime) novels.

The long version of the early tale "The Mysterious Ship" appears in print for the first time anywhere.

Writes Joshi, "The discarded draft of 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' is found on the back of the extant manuscript of the final draft of the story, and individual pages of it have apparently been incorporated into the finished story. It has several points of interest, including the narrator's visit to the Marsh retail office--a scene excised from the final draft."

The book ends with Lovecraft's magnificent essay, SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE.

Once the fully corrected text edition is published at the end of 2011, this edition of H. P. Lovecraft's solo Works will be THE definitive edition of all of those tales that he wrote on his own (and his collaboration with E. Hoffmann Price).

Later this year Arcane Wisdom Press will bring forth the first of two volumes of Lovecraft's revisions and collaborations, THE CRAWLING CHAOS AND OTHERS, edited and annotated by S. T. Joshi, and once the second of those volumes is published we will have all of Lovecraft's fiction available. It's a sweet time to be a Lovecraft fan, aye.

A slightly more typo-free reprint of the Barnes & Noble "Complete Fiction", minus the Joshi notes

This "Knickerbocker Classics" edition of Lovecraft's (more or less) Complete Fiction is actually an apparently licensed dupe of the contents of the infamous, typo-riddled Barnes and Noble edition (complete with the same font), namely the second "corrected" edition that fixes most of the typos, but introduces a few new ones of its own. The B&N edition has more material, but this edition features an introduction by Eric Carl Link, not S.T. Joshi (Joshi's introductory notes for each story have also been excised). I have checked the text against some of both the typos found in the original B&N edition by Martin Andersson, and the typos in the second "corrected" printing found by myself and another dedicated reader who scoured the B&N "corrected" version for further errors. This new edition issued by Knickerbocker Classics features corrections to some of the additional typos found in the "corrected" second B&N printing, but not all of them (it seems whoever did the corrections for this Knickerbocker volume googled our proofing work and then made the corrections... but stopped at a certain point). I haven't actually read the entire volume yet, so it may have its own special "surprises" lurking, but it seems be a very fine volume in tandem with the corrected second B&N printing, with a few less typos, albeit this one features none of the "Juvenilia" or other bonuses in the B&N volume, and is slightly less visually beautiful compared the Leatherbound edition. It does, however, come with a nice slipcover, and is quite heavy and sturdy.

These are the typos I've verified so far that are ported over to this volume, left uncorrected from the last B&N volume (please note that the typos are on the left, bordered by hyphens since Amazon doesn't allow formatting, with the correct version on the right):

The best "complete," one-volume, Lovecraft out there.

I own both the first and second B&N Complete Lovecraft editions and this is, far and away, the best of them all. I won't go into the typos that appear in both the B&N editions and this one (that's already been covered by another reviewer) but I will talk about the books themselves.

The 2008 B&N edition is rather plain and underwhelming, with basic black boards, plain purple end-papers and a rather unattractive dust-jacket. But, at the time, it was the only book that collected all (or almost all, at any rate) of Lovecraft's fiction in one volume. Plus, it was only $12.95.

The 2011 B&N reprint is a much spiffier affair. Bound in faux leather -- which, despite feeling kind of cheap-ish is still very nice -- with silver gilt edging, a satin bookmark and very cool marbled end-papers, it's definitely a step-up from the 2008 edition. I'm not personally thrilled with the design of the cover, but that's just my opinion. It sells for $18.00.

This Knickerbocker Classics edition blows them all away. The slipcase, which boasts a very well-done Cthulhu illustration, is thick and remarkably sturdy. The text on the front of the slipcase is embossed and the Cthulhu illustration is printed in silver, metallic ink. It makes for a very impressive presentation. A minor annoyance is a paper describing the book is glued to the back of the slipcase. I tried to carefully and slowly remove it and some of the paper of the slipcase began to come away with it so I guess it stays. It would be nice, however, if it were easily removed if desired. Unlike the two B&N editions which have glued bindings, this edition has a stitched binding which should hold up better over time. The cloth-bound covers are very impressive in blue and metallic silver, and there is a silver satin bookmark. The end-papers are light grey with a scale-like design, nice, but not nearly as nice as the end-papers on the 2011 B&N edition.

The paper is of a very similar stock on all three editions and is certainly on the thin side; there is a fair amount of text-bleed through the pages. But all three books in question are nearly 1100 pages so thin paper is a bit of a necessity to keep the weight and size at manageable levels.

Overall, this edition is the far superior one. The first B&N edition has cheap written all over it, plus there are the hundreds of typos to contend with. The second B&N edition is decent but the faux leather and somewhat ugly cover design doesn't do it any favors, and it ends up looking and feeling like a book that's trying to be a lot more than what it actually is. The Knickerbocker edition looks and feels elegant. It's really quite beautiful and if it cost twice what it actually does it would still certainly be worth it. A very, very nice book.

Unique and Distinguishing Features

Exercises for Most Sections. Each section that teaches programming has an exercise set. The exercises both reinforce the understanding of the key ideas of the section and challenge the student to explore applications. Most of the exercise sets require the student to trace programs, find errors, and write programs. The answers to all the odd-numbered exercises in Chapters 2 through 10 and selected odd-numbered exercises from Chapter 11 are given at the end of the text.

Practice Problems. Practice Problems are carefully selected exercises located at the end of a section, just before the exercise set. Complete solutions are given following the exercise set. The practice problems often focus on points that are potentially confusing or are best appreciated after the student has worked on them. The reader should seriously attempt the practice problems and study their solutions before moving on to the exercises.

Programming Projects. Beginning with Chapter 3, chapters contain programming projects. The programming projects not only reflect the variety of ways that computers are used in the business community, but also present some games and general-interest topics. The large number and range of difficulty of the programming projects provide the flexibility to adapt the course to the interests and abilities of the students. Some programming projects in later chapters can be assigned as end-of-the-semester projects.

Comments. Extensions and fine points of new topics are deferred to the "Comments" portion at the end of each section so that they will not interfere with the flow of the presentation.

Case Studies. Each of the four case studies focuses on an important programming application. The problems are analyzed and the programs are developed with top-down charts and pseudocode. The programs can be found in the PROGRAMS directory of the accompanying CD.

Chapter Summaries. In Chapters 3 through 11, the key results are stated and the important terms are summarized at the end of the chapter.

Procedures. The early introduction of procedures in Chapter 4 allows structured programming to be used in simple situations before being applied to complex problems. However, the text is written so that the presentation of procedures easily can be postponed until decision and repetition structures have been presented. In Chapters 5 and 6 (and Sections 7.1 and 7.2), all programs using procedures appear at the ends of sections and can be deferred or omitted.

Arrays. Arrays are introduced gently in two sections. The first section presents the basic definitions and avoids procedures. The second section presents the techniques for manipulating arrays and shows how to pass arrays to procedures.

How To Appendix. Appendix B provides a compact, step-by-step reference on how to carry out standard tasks in the VB.NET environment.

Appendix on Debugging. Placing of the discussion of VB.NET's sophisticated debugger in Appendix D allows the instructor flexibility in deciding when to cover this topic.

Examples and Case Studies CD. Each book contains a CD holding all the examples and case studies from this text. In addition, the CD holds all the text files and databases needed for the exercises.

Moving on To VB.Net

A reasonable coverage on the topic of Visual Basic. This references normal command structures and many other basic commands that are not covered in other texts. I keep it on the shelf for a reference, use it to provide answers to some of my basic programming questions. It is a step beyond the earlier books available on Visual Basic. This text seems to have been better thought out than most. It could be used in a classroom teaching environment. I did not receive a discount on this product in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. For almost all my purchases I rely on reviews before deciding whether or not I make the purchase. I tend to ignore the reviews about a product where the reviewer raves about an item without giving clear reasons for their conclusions. I likewise pay close attention to reviews that are critical of an item. Customers that are unhappy tend to have a greater motivation to leave a review than does a happy customer. Customers leaving a critical review are often writing out of frustration because they had a bad experience, and they will often point out concerns that are valid that positive reviewers may often glaze over or even ignore. With all reviews, I encourage you to read between the lines. If the review is totally generic and the words could be written for any product then I suggest that you ignore that review. Lot of practice problems

The best way to learn a computer language is the same as the best way of learning a human language, you need to practice. That's why practice problems are essential to any beginner's book to any programming language. This book has BY FAR the most practice problems for the VB.net learners. It also has detailed and useful explaination of basic VB.net concepts. What you learn in this book will provide a solid framwork for more complicated VB.net subjects.

Tremendous coverage but may not cover all you want

This is a reworking of Schneider's earlier VB book(s). It is important at the outset to grasp that this book, like his others, is written from a traditional data processing perspective (ubiquitous bank/loan account examples). Strong emphasis on structured programming is demonstrated throughout. So it's quite traditional in how it approaches topics. It has a marvellous collection of exercises both short and project based. If you can work through these, you will have a very good knowledge of traditional core programming skills. And this is the key point of the text: it is primarily about teaching you how to program using VB.net as the instruction medium and not anything else.
This is no quick tips and tools book, though it obviously contains such. Secondly, it is not a how to do GUIs book. You won't find much here on building multimedia applications or graphical games. Instead, the book offers a shoehorning of masses of programming techniques into the VB.net environment. And the work is very high quality both in terms of the examples and their pedagogical value.
In terms of layout, the book is particularly good. For a start it more or less lies flat when you open it. Colour coding of programs is used, and each chaper and topic is illustrated with clearly flagged example code and displays. There is no shortage of well developed code, (though some of the examples may seem a little conservative).
The first two thirds of the book introduces a bit of history and traditional programming thinking: procedures, decision logic, loops, arrays and files. The remainder deals with controls, OO in VB.net and database access. The OO chapter uses a reasonable number of examples to convey techniques and the exercises are interesting, but it is introductory (don't expect a crash course in abstract datatypes). However the chapter has but one graphics based example which is a bit mean.
While the book has exemplary strengths over and above the majority in the field, there are a few weaknesses which indicate the need for at least one supplementary text.
In the first place, the book has nothing to say on GDI+ programming, and many will judge this oversight as a serious flaw. Secondly, the multiple document interface capacity of VB.net (changed somewhat from VB6) is not developed. Indeed with the exception of three pages on adding multiple forms (482-485), the rationale for multiwindowed displays is completely overlooked. In fairness, the book is not focused around user interface design issues (either a strength or a weakness depending on your needs).
The chapter on databases access is good but just above elementary. However, don't expect a run down on web servers and XML. These topics are not covered. Even a brief chapter on XML would not be out of place.
From a slightly more pedantic position, I am surprised that there is no general chapter on data structures. Arrays are given a very handsome chapter, and sorting a searching are developed well, but we don't explore explicitly stacks and queues. Now one of the strengths of VB.net is that stack and queue creation and manipulation are made trivial due to inbuilt functions. It would have been useful to see these in action. Moreover, trees and graphs are not covered, and that is a bit of a puzzle.
Overall the book is a superb programming text. Dated perhaps in some of its focus, but still a better introduction to programming than many notionally equivalent texts, which are perhaps more glamorous, but almost certainly less thoughtful.

Essential guiding principles for business

Full disclosure, I know the publisher of this book. I also worked at Apple for nearly a decade, creating marketing for Mac computers, and I can tell you that the quotes in "I, Steve" encapsulate everything I learned while I was there: Paying attention to little details (because they matter). Relentless simplification. Knowing what to say 'no' to. These principles can apply to many aspects of business and reading them in Steve's words are an excellent reminder that we don't have to settle for mediocrity. This is not a biography, nor is it an exploitation of the man's death, as this book has been scheduled for publication for many months now. This book is an essential tool for how to think about the problems you wrestle with at work. Bring a copy to your office. Start off every meeting reading a random quote. See what happens.

A quick, fun trip through one of the greatest minds of our time.

What a fun and interesting book about Steve Jobs, a more breezy counterpoint to the official biography. I, Steve starts with a light biography and highlights "Milestones," a year-by-year look at Apple's (and Jobs's) successes. The real meat of the book is in the quotes from Jobs on every conceivable topic, sort of a Bartlett's Quotations focusing exclusively on this amazing man.

Steve Jobs once said that most overnight successes take a long time. I, Steve feels meticulously researched and well put-together. At once educational and inspiration, I, Steve is perfect for both MacAddicts and anyone looking to exceed.

A great book of Steve Jobs quotations.

Recently, I got the Isaacson book Steve Jobs giving it a four star review. If it had more quotes by Jobs I definitely would have given it five stars.

I, Steve being entirely dedicated to Jobs quotes makes a perfect companion piece for that book and I recommend both. I decided on Kindle because I like to highlight great quotes, and because of its compelling price.

It's about 160 pages as a book which equates to about 300 pages on Kindle with one 1 to 3 long quotes per page. In addition to one or two liners they can run to 8 to 10 lines, with extended quotes from diverse sources such as Time Magazine, Apple promotions, Fast Company, Stanford speech, Playboy, Triumph of the Nerds, the Smithsonian, and many others, which if you're like me you probably have not read before, and won't find on a typical quote search.

Here are some examples:

Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles. Bloomberg Businessweek, February 6, 2006.

On the location of Apple stores in high end malls: The real estate was a lot more expensive (but people) didn't gamble with 20 minutes of their time. They only had to gamble with 20 footsteps of their time. CNN Money/Fortune, March 8, 2007.

Anyone can be psychic.

“Being psychic is a learned skill.” (page 4, emphasis mine)

I rarely pick up a book & then can’t put it down. The Psychic Workbook is on of those rare books that is not only well-written, but it is highly informative and helpful. Anyone who wishes to work on developing their intuition and psychic abilities more fully will find this book to be one of the most useful titles ever written on the subject.

The book begins by identifying the “clairs” (clairaudience, clairsentience, clairvoyance, claircognizance, and even clairalience and Psychic workbook pageclairgustance), which are classifications of various types of psychic ability. The author then focuses on short exercises that help you to identify the clairs that are the strongest for you. Once you have done that, the rest of the book is filled with numerous exercises for you to do in order to develop your strongest clairs more fully AND to also focus on developing the other clairs.

Exercises range in length from short to those that require perhaps up to 20 minutes to complete, and everywhere in between. What I particularly appreciate about The Psychic Workbook is that the author provides ample space within the pages not only to record all of your answers to the questions contained within the exercises, but there are always psychic workbook page 2several pages of lined blank paper at the end of every chapter where you can record your own observations. This is really nice because then you’re not required to purchase a journal, unless you are addicted to journals like I am.

The Psychic Workbook is well-written and easy to understand and does not leave the reader feeling like an authority from on high is talking down to them (a personal pet peeve I have with many books of this nature). Instead, the tone of the book focuses on an attitude of “try this, you might like it; and if not, simply move on to something else.” Don’t feel you MUST complete EVERY exercise in the order in which it is presented. I skipped around in the book and did those exercises that interested me the most and this approach worked out just fine for me. If you want to carry out each exercise in order, of course there isn’t anything wrong with that approach either. Many people, when they are faced with a book that contains exercises have terrible flashbacks to school and having to complete all exercises within a chapter in order to be tested on the material at the conclusion of the chapter. This book is nice and friendly. I doubt very much that you will experience any unpleasant school-related flashbacks. In fact, had my schoolbooks been more like this one I may have enjoyed school even more so than what I actually did. I loved school simply because I love the process of learning new things.

The author, Dr. Karen Fox, is a professional psychic medium, medical intuitive and psychic educator with over 30 years teaching experience. She currently teaches at the Aspen Program for Psychic Development in Denver, Colorado. She is educated in the formation and organization of curriculum and this is very apparent throughout The Psychic Workbook. The book reads like a course book from start to finish. Exercises are well organized, to the point, and all are very helpful.

The Psychic Workbook will appeal to anyone who has ever had an intuitive hunch and who is interested in developing their intuition further. The Psychic Workbook would also be of interest to those of us already psychic in one or two areas, but may want to train ourselves to develop skills in other areas of psychic development. The Psychic Workbook will appeal to newbies as well as seasoned psychic professionals and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
