A Horrible Book Which Is Important Nonetheless

My first thought about this book was that it was confusing as hell and I wanted to get rid of it as soon as my class over. The distinction between a latin letter to represent a scalar, a greek letter to represent a vector and an italic letter to represent a matrix was just too messed up. But it's grown on me and now I see the value in this book. Whereas all other linear algebra books talk about vector spaces and groups over the fields of real or complex numbers, Finkbeiner discusses other fields as well like the finite integer fields. That fact turned out to be so useful in my later life and it never would have occurred to me had it not been for this book. I heartily recommend it and suggest that you plow through it despite the horrible way it's written. I'm scoring it in the middle because of the way it reads.

The cave was discovered in 1994 and the art inside had been studied very carefully. Then, in 2012 a further chance discovery was made.

Through the Paleolithic looking glass

If you are interested in ancient maps, a single picture in this book makes it worth a look. Imagine the thirteenth century renderings (such as the DiCanestris map) which portray continents as human bodies. Move back in time 35,000 years and imagine Europe and North Africa mapped as animal bodies.

And as star maps on the ceilings of caves.

Imagine walking along the bank of a totally placid and glass-like river on a sunny day, enjoying the fantastic "beings" that appear as the shore is perfectly mirrored in the water. I have often seen such faces as the one on the cover of this book. (Just orient the image to horizontal.)

I don't want to judge this book because I don't know enough about Egypt, calendars, or ancient religion. I don't accept the pyramid on Mars theory. And I don't really like Amazon's rating categories. But the author has given me a glimpse of a capacity of perception that I want to reawaken.

Compelling information and food for thought.

I think the cave paintings are just tremendous, so was interested in what the author had to share in terms of underlying or hidden drawings beneath the incredible art, linking ancient civilizations. I found the book very compelling and feel it tracks back to what Picasso said when seeing leaving Lascaux "We have learned nothing." Have we learned and lost vast information before? How can such similarities of elements within paintings happen when there's over 20,000 years between them? And what about that map within the drawings of the cats? Wow! Many questions raised and great food for thought! I'll look forward to further interpretations from the author and others.

About the Author

Robin Alter, PhD, CPsych, received her undergraduate degree from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. She was the head of the children's program at Tri-County Mental Health in Northern Florida before moving to Toronto, ON, Canada, where she has been working in children’s mental health in since 1980. Alter has been employed by two of the largest children’s mental health centers in the Toronto area for over thirty-six years—The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre, and Blue Hills Child and Family Centre.

Alter also works with Anishnawbe Health Toronto, providing fetal alcohol assessments for the people of the First Nations community. She has taught psychology at York University, and maintains a private practice with Alter, Stuckler and Associates in the Toronto area. She is a trustee with the Psychology Foundation of Canada. Alter gives many public lectures to parent groups, teachers, and principals, and has been on numerous radio and television programs talking about children’s mental health issues. She is author of Anxiety and the Gift of Imagination, and is the anxiety expert for the website, the ABCs of Mental Health.

Crystal Clarke, MSW, RSW, received her undergraduate social work degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada in 2007. Before continuing on to complete her master’s degree, Clarke worked as a social worker in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services in the city of St. John’s, NL, Canada, while also supporting foster families through her involvement on the board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association. Clarke received her master’s of social work degree at the University of Toronto in 2010, where she specialized in clinical practice with children and families, and also completed the collaborative program in addiction studies. By 2009, Clarke was involved with The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre, one of the largest children’s mental health centers in Toronto, ON, Canada, where she was employed as a child and family therapist until 2016, when she moved to the Toronto District School Board to work as a social worker with school-aged children and their families.

Additionally, Clarke maintains her own private practice, Clarke Psychotherapy, in Toronto. In 2015, Clarke was also appointed as an adjunct lecturer for the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto as a result of her ongoing commitment to the training and supervision of social work students. Clarke continues to expand upon her own knowledge and expertise in the field of mental health through her training at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.

Not a great re-telling

I wish I would have re-read Hamlet before tackling this contemporary remake. If I had done that, maybe I would have enjoyed this more, but as it was, I felt that this was a truly dull retelling of the classic story. I found the authors writing style very abrupt. I did not find it to be "beautiful prose" as one reviewer stated. This book did not flow well at all and the author did nothing to highlight the drama present in this story. It seems that so much could have been done with the characters, but instead they are lifeless and flat. Hamlet is a mess and Ophelia is nothing but a caricature of a sex starved adolescent. I was very disapointed with this effort and didn't finish the book. Reading this has inspired me to go back and read the play again so in that respect it was a worthwhile effort. In all others though, it seems to be a giant missed opportunity to do something that could have been great.

Something's rotten in Denmark, but this time, it's not Shakespeare's normally confusing play. Marsden does a fantastic job of taking the Bard's poetic writing and updating it for modern readers.

Hamlet still faces issues the original author set for him (an unfaithful mother, a murderous uncle, the hauntingly attractive Ophelia), but the reader is able to delve more deeply into the characters as they are brought to life by Marsden's beautiful prose.

Since this is a modern version, it does have a few instances of cursing as well as some sexual innuendo, so I feel it would be better suited to older teens and adults.

Thanks to a fantastic high school English teacher, I never had trouble understanding HAMLET, but I enjoyed reading Marsden's version and seeing a more modern twist on the story.

I Love Hamlet. This is Boring.

Reason for Reading: I enjoy Shakespeare retellings and Hamlet is probably my favourite Shakespeare.

The book tells the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The plot is there and all the major points are present. The author uses some of the original language while modernizing it yet keeping all the most famous quotes such as "to be or not to be". So to read this book one does get the plot of Shakespeare's Hamlet without having to read or experience the original. But I was not impressed with this retelling at all.

The darkness, brooding atmosphere of the original is missing. The time period is vague, it could be the recent past or timeless ages past. But most of all the portrayals of Hamlet and Ophelia are nothing as they are in the original. Ophelia is shown as nothing but a wanton sex-craving girl who dreams of nothing but mentally luring Hamlet to come to her. Her suicide is all matter of fact and hardly anyone seems to even care, least of all Hamlet who has much larger problems to deal with. Of course, as in the play, major plot point, it is Ophelia's brother who is upset at her death.

My greatest joy in the original plot of Hamlet is the question of his sanity. The movie starring Kenneth Branagh is a fabulous adaptation portraying this. Has Hamlet really gone insane or is he only pretending? This whole issue has been removed from Marsden's version. People around Hamlet speak of his madness as they would today of a teenager's rebellious stage. Hamlet himself speaks of his madness as if it were a cold. This version lacks passion and the intricacies of the original plot. And on top of all that, the appearance of Hamlet's father's ghost is a very brief single episode which, of course, plants the seed of revenge but is hardly an experience that could cause madness in anyone. All to say this is rather boring if you already know the plot of Hamlet and I wouldn't recommend it as an introduction; there must be something better out there. Not recommended.

Understanding Foucault means understanding all his interlocutors—whether Marxists, Maoists, neoliberals, or social democrats. It requires turning to Foucault's colleagues, including Deleuze and Guattari, François Ewald, and Blandine Kreigel, in relation to whom he carved out a position. And it entails an examination of his legacy in Hardt and Negri, the theorists of Empire, or in Nikolas Rose, the influential English sociologist. Foucault's own view is highly ambiguous: he claims to be concerned with the exercise of political sovereignty, yet his work cannot make visible the concept of the state. Moving beyond Foucault, the authors outline new ways of conceiving the state's role in establishing social order and in mediating between an inequality-producing capitalist economy and the juridical equality and political rights of individuals. Arguing that states and their cooperation remain of vital importance to resolving contemporary crises, they demonstrate the interdependence of state and civil society and the necessity of social forms of governance.
