A short meditation for the dissatisfied beginner

For every minimalist blog, there are two truths:
1) The blog will be "minimized" out of the author's life before the subject of the blog becomes passé.
2) There will be a book. This is one of those books.

"Enough" is a compilation of essays about finding a balance between more and less. Rhone is a good writer, picking a good balance between sparse and personable prose. This is the joy of reading this book, especially in the essays where he communicates something fundamental in a way that feels effortless. The essays are short and read like blogs, but this is a strength. Many of them are almost koan-like in scope - read it, meditate on it, thumb over the logic in your mind. The book is not long, so I found many of the topics satisfying to consider for a moment before moving on.

At times, Enough shifts to a longer first person essay to address an inconsequential and superficial topic. Perhaps I just didn't see the big picture, but many pages of this short book is spent simmering over topics like social networks, iPhones and email, or one out-of-place essay playing semantic games with the word "user." One could image the author eating an egg for breakfast and then talking at length about what a good choice he made due to the egg's texture, nutritional elements, how it lacked the necessity of spice, and so on. These seemed like trivial, surface-level matters to me, and did not require the pages allotted to them, though they may resonate with others.

I would recommend this book to those dissatisfied with their lives or not used to reflecting on their habits and thoughts, used as a stepping stone to challenging classics like Walden or Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. For those familiar with minimalism, stoicism, buddhism, or simple living concepts, you may find something here, but there will be well treaded ground to cover first.

She writes candidly about the reasons for her defection, her previous life in the Soviet Union and at the embassy, and her struggles as a single parent attending an American business school and then starting her own business. Her story should be taught in American schools. Perhaps then our young people would have a better appreciation for their liberty and not take freedom for granted. What a courageous woman!.

Enlightening

I read this book ages ago and wondered how people in the U. S. S. R. could stand living in the kind of deprivation that they suffered. Mrs. Costa shows us how: they lived in ignorance of how we in America were living, even 40 years ago. They did realize that color played a more important role in our lives in the 60's since they would cherish those old plastic Comet containers as pretty objets d'art to decorate their homes - if they could get one on the black market. I found a copy I had recently and noticed how many of the things Mrs. Costa describes about Russian life then are happening in America today, so I sent one to my uncle so we could watch together as our country changes to a mirror image of deprivation under sincere lies and heavier tax burdens and less freedom. For example: When Mrs. Costa got her new Buick over here from the Russian Embassy, she mistakenly got on the wrong freeway and headed out of D. C. The freeway had no exits for about 35 miles, so she was desperate to get off of it and slowed almost to a stop. A trooper came to her rescue, and she sobbed out her story, begging him not to take her to prison for being so far away from her residence. He asked her if she was a Russian citizen. Yes. Well, this is America, and if you have the money and time, you can drive all the way to California, and no one is going to take you to prison. I keep wondering just how long that will be true. Every one who loves driving, saving money, shopping, variety in life, the right to run your own life should read this book just to see if socialism/communism is really what we want here. We've NEVER been under the tyranny of a monarchy, oligarchy, etc. Could we the people endure that?

The vast majority of Soviet defectors were men. If women were involved, they were most likely the wives of the defectors. And not only were the defectors mainly men. They were also nearly always KGB or GRU (military intelligence) spies. Elena Alexandra Costa (aka. Yelena Mitrokhina) was therefore a rare kind of defector indeed. She was not a spy and nor was she a soldier. She worked in the area of publishing and copyrights, one of the Soviets' few truly legitimate commercial activities in the West. Long accustomed to the primitive living conditions endured by most Russians during the communist era -- food shortages, interminable lineups, cramped living space -- she was unprepared for the material wealth and open friendliness that she found in Washington. It was not long before she could see the greater opportunities that life in America would offer her two pre-school children. She eloquently describes her turmoil as she weighs the risks and advantages to defecting. Perhaps the most wrenching part of her story comes after she defects. She is nearly overwhelmed by culture shock and sense of isolation. She begins to understand why fully half of those who defected ended up returning to the Soviet Union within a short period of time. She also sees that she is not completely trusted by the American authorities, that like so many other would-be defectors , she might turn out to be a double agent. The book beautifully describes her astounding journey from Soviet student and philologist, to Soviet copyright representative, to defector and finally to successful Wharton MBA graduate and computer consultant, all accomplished while raising two small children singlehandedly. Alexandra Costa has given us a rare and invaluable account of a courageous woman's harrowing transition literally from one world into another.

Taken from Chapter 17: How the barter system worked Most of the settlers in a pioneer community used the barter system instead of money. Instead of taking money to do the shopping as we do today, the settlers would gather up things that grew on their farms and trade them for items in the store. Trade products were sometimes known as "country pay. " Little money was used because farmers did not earn wages. They just grew their crops and traded them for things they needed. Bartering meant trading one product for another of equal value. However, it was difficult for farmers to trade for equal value amongst each other. Someone always owed something to somebody. There had to be a record kept of who owed what to whom. The general store made the barter system work. Instead of trading with each other, everyone brought their goods to the general store. The storekeeper added up what was brought in and what was taken from the store. He kept a record of what people owed or how much credit they had.

An interesting look at American storefronts and markets. It explains products sold and the roles of shopkeepers, but the visuals aren't what I had wished. Some recent pictures of people dressed up as store owners and shoppers. I'd also wished it discussed more about economics in the 18th and 19th century. I will use it occasionally as a reference item, but I have found more interesting formats.

If you don't like cats, you may not like this book. The romance and story was cute, but I felt there was a lot of unnecessary profanity included when it didn't really help in the story. Also, some of the sex scenes were just a bit disgusting in their descriptions. Just be ready for some offensiveness.

I will just say that there is nothing like reading a billionaire romance books written by Jessica Clare. Ms. Clare never fails in delivering a sexy, fun, swoon-worthy billionaire romance that will have readers wanting their own billionaire. And in The Taming of the Billionaire, she not only delivers a hot sexy sweet romance but she made it fun and quirky that will have readers purring MEOW when they meet the sexy yet geeky gamer billionaire, Magnus Sullivan.

Magnus Sullivan is your geeky billionaire that made his fortune with his brother, Levi by creating a gamer's app that has hit worldwide phenomenon. Magnus relies on Levi to help him create these new upcoming gamer apps, but in all honesty mostly Magnus does all the work. So when a new game that they are developing is approaching a deadline, he needs Levi to get back on track to help him come up with new ideas for the game but Levi is distracted with his infatuation with Bianca, a woman that he met at Gretchen's wedding planning dinner party. Bianca happens to be the sister of Edie, one of Gretchen's bridesmaid.

Edie is one Gretchen's closest and dear friends. She happens to be a feline behaviorist hence she is a bonafide cat lady!!! During this informal pre-wedding planning party, Edie and Magnus did not get along.She thought Magnus was an arrogant billionaire and he thought she was too snarky and feisty. So when Magnus asked Edie out and hires her to help him with his newly adopted cats, it completely surprises her. She couldn't figure out why Magnus wanted anything to do with her. As Magnus and Edie spent more time together, he finally saw Edie for who she is: a beautiful, caring, giving and selfless woman. As Edie finally lets Magnus into her heart, what happens when she finds out that Magnus only asked her out so his brother and her sister can continue a secret relationship? As secrets and truths unfold, will Edie end up as the lonely cat lady? Or will Magnus be able to redeem himself and show her that he did really love Edie?

The Taming of the Billionaire is a sweet, touching yet fun billionaire romance read. Though the book is mainly on Magnus on Edie, it did highlight and showcased that Magnus and Edie had to really reevaluate their relationships with their siblings. Magnus need to realize that maybe he didn't really need Levi as much as he thought and for Edie, she had to really step back on her relationship with Bianca. The Taming of the Shrew meets Billionaires to marvelous effect. I am an established fan of Jessica Clare’s Billionaire Boys Club and its spin-off Billionaires and Bridesmaids. Those unfamiliar with either series should have no trouble jumping in here. Those familiar with Beauty and the Billionaire should rejoice at the presence of Gretchen and Hunter in this story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment. Some reviewers have indicated that they had issues with the heroine. Edie is not a sunshine-and-roses, sweet-as-can-be heroine. She’s blunt and straightforward. She’s is who she is (which may come across as prickly to some), but she is never cruel. I liked her. Magnus is a driven, yet affable hero. I felt like there was excellent chemistry between the pair. The overall story was fun and funny and touching: everything I have come to expect from the novels in these series.

This was the first fantasy book I have read on my Kindle, let alone in the last twenty years of my life. The book was a great and intriguing tale of fantasy. I could not put the book down everytime I read as I was wanting more and more. The character development is superb and it is well written. When I was finished, i was left wanting more as I already want to purchase the second book if there is one in the Turik Saga. Cudos to the writer on this fine piece of literature and I promise it will draw you in even if you do not pertake in fantasy reads.

My favorite books ~ give a flowing description that you can picture it all in your head without boring you with too much detail and takes you away to the fantasy. You find yourself not being able to put it down because you want to know what is going to happen next.
