I have been looking for this book for a while and just started to read it. It is one of the best books that documents what Jews have been doing for humanity. The title of the book is absolutely right. I recommend this book to anyone, Jewish or not, who wants to know what gifts Jews have been giving to the world for thousands of years, which still continues every day.

Biblical Studies Lite: Half the calories, Less filling

It is very obvious upon reading that this is the work of a well-informed amateur and not the work of a professional scholar. For a much more respectable and intellectually stimulating take on the Western migration from pantheism to monotheism, read Karen Armstrong's "History of God". Unlike Armstrong, Cahill resorts to glittering generalities and obtuse simplicities. There is also a disturbing lack of footnotes in most sections. Furthermore, the central hypothesis of "Gift of the Jews", that the Jews invented individuality and historic time, is too over-arching to be taken at face value. What makes this worse is that Cahill's analysis of other, non-Western, cultures is incredibly cursory. Cahill sets up an underfed strawman in the form of the "cyclical worldview", only to lamely knock it down with the Western-centric feather of processivism. Finally, too much of "Gift of the Jews" is dedicated to a paraphrasing of the events of the Torah; there is very little analysis interspersed between the "Movie of the Week" plot summaries. This book feels rushed and half-done, as if the author were behind on a deadline and needed to put in lots of filler material. On the bright side, it is easy to read, simplistic, and approachable. It is also very sensitive to those of Faith. As such, I can really only recommend this work to those who have never read a tome of religious study before and need something that is inoffensive, easy to swallow, mildly informative, and full of lots spiritual good feelings. For a meatier, more challenging, and, ultimately, more satisfying read, see Armstrong's "History of God".

Rafal Kuc is a software engineer, trainer, speaker and consultant. He is working as a consultant and software engineer at Sematext Group Inc. where he concentrates on open source technologies such as Apache Lucene, Solr, and Elasticsearch. He has more than 14 years of experience in various software domains―from banking software to e–commerce products. He is mainly focused on Java; however, he is open to every tool and programming language that might help him to achieve his goals easily and quickly. Rafal is also one of the founders of the solr.pl site, where he tries to share his knowledge and help people solve their Solr and Lucene problems. He is also a speaker at various conferences around the world such as Lucene Eurocon, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon, Lucene/Solr Revolution, Velocity, and DevOps Days. Rafal began his journey with Lucene in 2002; however, it wasn't love at first sight. When he came back to Lucene in late 2003, he revised his thoughts about the framework and saw the potential in search technologies. Then Solr came and that was it. Marek Rogozinski

Marek Rogozinski is a software architect and consultant with more than 10 years of experience. 4 1/2 Stars! ~ When Kate had accepted the position of setting up a posh tearoom in the English countryside, it was like prayers answered. Only when she arrived at the estate where the tearoom would open, she discovers that a man who had rudely judged her as having lose morals was now her boss. Jay is rather surprised to discover the beautiful chef in his kitchen garden, had she not signed an iron clad contract with his aunt over the tearoom, he would have sent her packing. Jay has a very cynical outlook when it comes to women, as they always seem to be wanting to use his power and wealth for their ambitions. Kate's had her heart bruised badly by a former fiance, and has built a cold shell around herself. Jay however seems to be the flame to melt that ice and she resorts to a lie to keep him at arms length. Of course, no matter what they resolve to themselves, fate has a way of keeping them off balance and in each others arms!

I adore a heroine who has a habit of letting her tongue get away from her. Kate is delightful! When Jay is about she sparks with life, and Jay can't help pushing her buttons as he thoroughly enjoys Kate's fireworks. This was a roller coaster ride to HEA!

In this book, Pitches breaks down Meyerhold to his essence (and Meyerhold would appreciate it!), making a lifetime of complicated ideas about theater and a vast directing career so clear and exciting. His clarity and enthusiasm for the work is thrilling, and the exercises for the theater student learning Meyerhold are right-on. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about Meyerhold, and this series of books to all young theater directors.

About the Author
Marc J. Schniederjans is the C. Wheaton Battey Distinguished Professor of Business in the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has served on the faculty of three other universities. Professor Schniederjans is a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) and in 2014-2015 will serve as DSI’s president. His prior experience includes owning and operating his own truck leasing business. He is currently a member of the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), and Decision Sciences Institute (DSI). Professor Schniederjans has taught extensively in operations management and management science. He has won numerous teaching awards and is an honorary member of the Golden Key honor society and the Alpha Kappa Psi business honor society. He has published more than a hundred journal articles and has authored or coauthored twenty books in the field of management. The title of his most recent book is Reinventing the Supply Chain Life Cycle, and his research has encompassed a wide range of operations management and decision science topics. He has also presented more than one hundred research papers at academic meetings. Professor Schniederjans is serving on five journal editorial review boards, including Computers & Operations Research, International Journal of Information & Decision Sciences, International Journal of Information Systems in the Service Sector, Journal of Operations Management, and Production and Operations Management. He is also serving as an area editor for the journal Operations Management Research and as an associate editor for the International Journal of Strategic Decision Sciences and International Journal of the Society Systems Science and Management Review : An International Journal (Korea). In addition, Professor Schniederjans has served as a consultant and trainer to various business and government agencies.

Dara G. Schniederjans is an assistant professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Rhode Island, College of Business Administration. She has published articles in journals such as Decision Support Systems, Journal of the Operational Research Society, and Business Process Management Journal. She has also coauthored two text books and coedited a readings book. She has contributed chapters to readings utilizing quantitative and statistical methods. Dara has served as a guest coeditor for a special issue on Business Ethics in Social Sciences in the International Journal of Society Systems Science. She has also served as a website coordinator for Decisions Sciences Institute. She currently teaches courses in Supplier Relationship Management and Operations Management.

Christopher M. Starkey is an economics student at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. He has presented papers at the Academy of Management and Production and Operations Management Society meetings. He currently teaches courses in Principles of Microeconomics and has taught Principles of Macroeconomics. Best book on Indoor Soccer for those transitioning from Outdoor Soccer

This book is not a book for those beginning to play soccer. This book is geared for those who already know how to play outdoor soccer and are transitioning to indoor soccer. The book starts out with a comprehensive comparison between indoor and outdoor play, discusses game systems and strategies, playing offense, playing defense, transitions, substitutions, goal keeping and plays. For each topic discussed, the author points out the differences between indoor and outdoor soccer and why something you may do in outdoor soccer may not be appropriate for indoor soccer or how you may need to adjust for indoor soccer play. The final chapter provides a set of drills which are specific to indoor soccer.

This is the best book I have found on indoor soccer. It is well written, with each chapter being broken up into short subsections which are to the point and augmented with easy to understand diagrams. This book contains about 129 pages of great insight into playing indoor soccer and was written by someone who clearly understands and explains "when and why" you need to play indoor soccer differently from outdoor soccer. I highly recommend this book for experienced outdoor soccer players transitioning to indoor soccer.Indoor Soccer: Strategies and Tactics

Good Book But Buy The Paperback

This book is made for indoor soccer players, but it is also useful for coaches (and perhaps players) of 6v6 and 7v7 outdoor soccer.

- It details difference between indoor and outdoor soccer.
- It discusses the various formations that are commonly used as well as their benefits and drawbacks.
- It discusses various strategies of play.

Obviously not all the info translates to outdoor soccer, but much of it does.

The only drawback is that for some reason, Kindle edition does not have the graphics that the paperback version has (mostly relating to formations and field) - which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

Bottom line: Great for indoor players and for enterprising coaches of outdoor U11 and below.

I have always been a believer in metrics. I need to see supporting numbers, clinical studies and repeatable results before I believe in a system. I have been that that way with my own businesses and my running in coaching endeavors. Combine this burden of proof with my fascination for running the mile and the result is this book. What prompted me to publish a second edition of this book was a talk I had with Don Neff, the father of the 2008 and 2009 1600m State Champ, Danny Neff.  Don told me I should interview his son who is attending the University of Georgia.  When I interviewed Danny he told me he had read this book the winter of his junior year in high school.  He followed the recommendations and went on to win back to back Division I State 1600m titles. Wow, as they say in the roll and rock song "this really blew my mind." That's real reason to believe baby!

Danny's profile is included in this second edition and as expected his training and race preparation follow the norm set by the previous state champs. A great living example of "you too can do it."

About the Author
Chuck Bridgman started running track in 1973. He ran throughout grade school, high school and college. Attending Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton Ohio, he was coached by a state high school champion and NCAA Division I All-American. While in high school Chuck won several class AA state titles in cross country and track and set a state record. After high school, Chuck ran cross country and track for Ohio State. During the 1980's and 1990s Chuck was a registered high school track and cross country official and computerize the scoring for the Ohio high school state cross country meet. In the early nineties, Chuck started coaching cross country at Chaminade-Julienne where he aided one of his female cross country athletes in achieving multiple Division I state titles. Chuck continues to assist with coaching high school men's cross-country and competing in the mile.

Awesome book, Awesome Author

I bought this when my son was a Junior in High School. Mr. Bridgman has compiled a great list of previous State Mile Champions and how they prepared for their season. He has a note in the book that says you're welcome to contact him with comments and questions so I did. I received a reply to my email right away. Throughout the rest of Adam's Track season last year and part of his Senior Year this year, Mr.Bridgman answered questions and offered advice. Adam went on to win the 1600m at his State Meet this year and ended his High School career as a State Champion. When I sent Mr. Bridgman an email (along with a video of the race) he was just as excited as if he had been there himself. It takes a village to raise a child and I have found throughout the years that runners seem to be the most generous of souls. Mr. Bridgman certainly is and I highly recommend his book!!!

The four things you need to win the Ohio state high school 1600m are blind courage, unshakable faith, physical ability and the correct training program. This book cannot help you with the first three. However, through interviews with high school 1600m state champions, analysis of how these state 1600m champions trained this book will provide you with the training program to win the state 1600m in 4:10.

As a high school distance coach, I was curious whether there was a common set of factors for winning the high school state 1600m. I decided to find this out by interviewing as many state 1600m champions as I could to determine what they did to win. As I started talking with these state champions, my list of questions grew and expanded beyond strict training questions and included whether they cross trained, weight trained, what they ate before racing and many other factors that affected their performance. If I had known how much time this book was going to take, I would most likely never have started it. But in the end, I had a great time interviewing the runners, several of them Olympic runners including my boyhood idol, 1972 800m Olympic gold medal winner, Dave Wottle, and compiling and analyzing their amazing results.

In the end, this book details an ambitious journey - the search for and discovery of the methods and training schedules of 17 state champions over 40 years who collectively won 24 1600m titles, all distilled into a complete day by day five month workout and race schedule. We find out how important winter conditioning is to success, if weight training and cross training make a difference, when and how to taper, what to eat the night before, race day warm up and much more. This book contains a complete list of what's important and what's not important to run a 4:10 the first Saturday in June and win the state 1600m.

Perhaps most importantly for the reader, we even find proof that the training and workout schedules I created from the interviews are valid. The first edition of this book was published in 2008. That year, a high school junior was handed this book by his track coach. He followed the training and work out schedules contained in this book and went on to win the State title that year and the next. This second edition includes the interview with this two-time state champion and adds his data to the summary of results.

As my first coach told me, "Don't ever step onto the track, unless you plan on winning."

A powerful tool

I was asked to speak at the Ohio Track Coaches Clinic and I thought this book would be a great reference about track in Ohio. I am a coach in Michigan and read a lot of track books to help me stay competitive. My book came in the mail on Monday afternoon and I could not put it down until I finished it Monday evening. No matter which training method you prescribe to, this is a powerful tool for anyone interested in coaching track and field. This is a unique opportunity to get into the psyche of so many great athletes all at once. This book compares, contrasts and draws trends from the data in a way that is easy to use for any level coach. In the few days I have had it I have shared this information with several of my athletes and they are just as excited as I am.
