Extremely Well Written!

If you yourself, or someone you love, or are a companion or caregiver to another with a serious mood disorder, this book was written for you. From years of experiance as a consumer of mental health services, as well as an active volunteer and facilitator with DBSA (Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance)in Southern California, Jerry Malugeon describes, with great accuracy and from the heart, what you can and should expect as a family member, companion, and/or caregiver, to a person with MDD (Major Depression Disorder)or Bipolar Illness. In a sense, this book can be considered as "one-stop" shopping in one's searh for answers to dealing with the difficulties that arise in caring for, living with, understanding, and copeing with life while dealing with the various extremes and uncertainties that arise in these situations! One other thing that truly impressed me was the optimistic tone in which "The Black Dog" was written, and the authors often mentioned theme, that "Recovery Is The Goal"

A Must for Loving Caregivers

I've passed this book along to people I know who are struggling in the caregiving role and they've all found it extremely helpful. The support and guidance available in this book would be valuable enough. But this author couples it with humor and lightness where appropriate and don't we all need a reason to smile? Many unsuspecting people across the world find themselves in caregiving situations at some point in their lives. If you are in this position or know someone who is, this book comes highly recommended.

Helping the bipolar caregivers - no psychobabble included

A person in a support group I facilitate mentioned that the contents of this book was the most helpful information he had received from any source to help deal with an adult son experiencing bipolar illness. Consequently I order it to learn what it had to say. It is an excellent, easily understood, thin paperback that is written by someone that speaks from personal experience. This is in some ways much more valuable and usable than books written by the professional counselors and therapists.
