About the Author

R. Mark Elling is certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America as a Level III Alpine Instructor and Level II Backcountry Guide. He has worked full-time in the ski industry since 1989, including six seasons as a guide at Mount Bailey Snowcat Skiing and assistant director of the ski school at Montana Snowbowl. Since 1996, he has been a product test for Ski and Skiing magazines, and he helps teach professional bootfitting seminars for Masterfit University. He has written articles for Skiing, The Professional Skier, and many other travel and sports publications.

A resource for the advanced skier

This book is great. A beginner or even an intermediate may find much of the information to be too advanced to be useful. Advanced skiers should find it to be an excellent resource.
The book, among other things emphasizes the importance of steering, espescially in the important transition phase between turns. (Intermediate and even advanced skiers who learn how to edge effectively, often abandon their steering skills and simply step from the outside edge of one ski to the outside edge of the other ski.) The mechanics of effective steering are explained well as is the importance of the skill in more difficult terrain.
Fundamentals are emphasized. The modifications and different blends of skills which are required on moguls, powder, crud, steeps, ice and in the trees are also explained very well.

The definitive ski instruction book

This book is amazingly comprehensive for its size. It is roughly two-hundred pages, yet it breaks down the essentials of making good turns, contains an in-depth look at each ski equipment and how to maintain it, and breaks down special techniques for various snow conditions (powder, moguls, etc). If this isn't enough, there is a more technical section at the end for serious ski freaks. This is nuts. I also have the book, "Ski the Whole Mountain", and it probably has only half the information this book has.
At first glance, you may not like this book because it is black and white and not as flashy as "Ski the Whole Mountain". Also, most of the pictures are hand-drawn illustrations. However, upon reading it, you will be hypnotized and the black and white illustrations seem to almost come alive. It is testimony to the fine writing by the author.
If you ever want to ski moguls, this is the book. For years, I look at expert mogul skiers go down and I keep saying to myself that they must have some special paths they follow but I just don't know what. Well, this book draws the path, the moguls, the works!
This is an amazing book and probably the only book you need to ski like a pro. But I read "The Skier's Edge", and that book actually contains even more technical information (if that's possible) so you may want to check that one as well.

Great approach to all-terrain skiing

Highly recommended book for any skier who aspires to the Holy Grail of being able to ski in all kinds of terrain, in any condition. This book is most suitable for intermediate to advanced skiiers who are hoping to make the progression to all-terrain skier one day.
It's often very difficult to pay attention to all of the different skills needed to ski well at the same time. Mr. Elling uses a "toolbox" approach to break down each skill, and recommends specific drills to strengthen one's abilities in each skill.
Where this book really shines, though, is Elling's explanation of how these different skills should be combined in order to tackle different types of terrain and/or snow condition. Many ski instruction books out there are written with the goal of teaching you how to ski expertly...on perfectly groomed snow. But the skills that apply to Eastern hardpack/ice (edging, pressure on single ski, etc.) do not apply to Utah powder (even weighting on both skis) and Mr. Elling spells out the differences better than anyone else I have come across.
Also a useful section on ski equipment and boot fit that correctly drives home how important good boot fit is to effective skiing.
Overall an excellent book that anyone who wants to stray off the corduroy should take a look at.

Like many savvy business people of the 21st century, David Bach offered his first pearls of financial wisdom to women, in his bestselling book Smart Women Finish Rich. Recognizing that these women are often accompanied by significant others and that money arguments are the number one cause of divorce in America, Bach has now broadened his scope. Presumably intended to help change this depressing statistic, Smart Couples Finish Rich is a well-written financial planning tool, packed with useful charts and information, inspiring examples, and practical advice.

For people who've been disappointed by the shallowness of some of the "quick tips" self-help books out there, the subtitle of this book is a little misleading. Bach's nine steps are not instant change techniques or chirpy little quips to recite to yourself whenever you go to balance your checkbook. Instead, the first few steps include a series of exercises that will help you determine what you know (and don't know, or understand) about saving and investing, what role money should play in your life (which includes understanding your values), and how to work together toward a common financial goal. From there, Bach teaches his readers how to account for "disappearing" money, how to build retirement, security, and dream baskets of wealth (providing detailed options for all three), and how to avoid the most common financial mistakes most couples make. Though the focus of the book is predominantly on working with your existing income, Bach includes a final chapter entitled "Increase Your Income by 10 Percent in Nine Weeks."

Bach's writing style is engaging and his advice is user-friendly. A successful financial planner, he obviously believes passionately in all the "fringe" benefits of being financially responsible but employs a no-nonsense approach that makes financial smarts available to everyone. However, Bach's work does distinguish itself in one critical area: Bach believes that all couples (gay and straight, married and unmarried) need to identify values as well as goals as their first step toward achieving financial security. For couples, though, it can be disastrous when mates discover that their attitudes about money do not mesh. Bach, who is the author of Smart Women Finish Rich: 7 Steps to Achieving Financial Security and Funding Your Dreams (1999), reports that fights about money are the main reason couples divorce in the U.S. Bach asks readers to examine their values jointly and shows the benefit of "align[ing] spending habits with . . . values." He emphasizes saving and makes a key point that when couples save together, the rewards are compounded. Bach then offers the "three-basket" approach to personal money management, recommending that money be set aside for retirement, security, and transforming dreams into reality. CPA or not, this is THE financial book for couples

I enjoy reading books on retirement planning and asset management. My ex-wife did not. I like to pay the bills, live by a budget, and do the household bookkeeping. She did not. I never got my Ex to read this book, though I tried. However, I still believe that this book is a great straightforward resource if you want to learn about saving and investing, building a nest egg for retirement, and having the financial independence to realize dreams, AS A COUPLE. I found this book very easy-to-read and informative, and planned to use it often for future reference. As a CPA and Certified Financial Planner, I am accustomed to reading finance books and articles that are loaded with technical jargon. However, David Bach presents this information in a much more refreshing manner, and in a way that is easy for those unfamiliar with financial terminology, to understand. It gives you a wealth of information about 401(k)s, life insurance, trusts, wills, mutual funds, DRIPs, and much more. Most importantly, Smart Couples Finish Rich emphasizes personal financial planning and management as practically a lifestyle, not just an exercise or process. It shows you how to determine, as individuals and as a couple, what values you hold dear and how your view of money, investing, consumption, etc., should be aligned with your values. It really helps the reader to see that everything that one does in his or her life is a reflection of their values, including how one plans and manages his/her financial future. I highly recommend this book to those couples who are looking for an effective tool to learn more about personal finance and how to provide for their rich future together.

Ironically, my ex-wife refused to give me my book when we were going our separate ways. I guess I will purchase a new one, since I now have someone I can actually share it with.

Very helpful; much of it timeless advice

There were three things I especially liked about this book.
The first was the way the author presented the fact that small things do add up. In the beginning of the book, he states that most people overestimate (financially) what they can accomplish in a year and underestimate what they can accomplish over many years. He includes graphs that illustrate this dramatically.
The second was the chapter on values. This chapter had a number of exercises for each partner to complete independently. Then, together, they can begin to draft a plan for their finances that embraces the values they each hold most closely. If the financial plan is customized to fit the values of the particular couple, taken together, it makes all the sense in the world that it will be easier and more satisfying to LIVE with that plan and carry it out over time (without either of the partners sabotaging the plan).
The third is somewhat tied into the first point I mentioned. It is a chapter called "The Couples Latte Factor." This chapter discusses "small," daily expenses and how, if a couple decides to eliminate or reduce even one or two of these daily expenses and invest that money instead, it can result in a lot of money, over time. This and most of the other chapters include real-life examples of couples whose experiences illustrate the principles being discussed.
I recognized the value of all of this advice right away as I was reading it, but initially felt a bit overwhelmed, thinking: "This is great, but how am I going to do it ALL?" Because I imagine that other people may have the same feelings, I will share the answer we ended up coming up with. A little at a time. I still haven't gotten up to investing 10% of my income in my company's 401(k), but as a couple, we ARE very near to reaching our goal of setting aside a year's worth of expenses in an emergency account and we HAVE adjusted the amount of life insurance we carry and had estate documents drafted by an attorney. Once we do have the complete year's worth of expenses set aside, I'll change my 401(k) investment to 10%.
Is this the order Mr. Bach or another financial planner would advise us to do things in? I don't know. I DO know that doing things the way we have, gradually following more and more of his advice has GOT to be better than being paralyzed and doing nothing...which is what we would have been in danger of doing if we hadn't taken it a little at a time.
A book I would recommend in conjunction with this is The Laws of Money, the Lessons of Life by Suze Orman.

STRONG, SOUND ADVICE!

Investing for your future is sound, strong advice at any age. As a teacher of business management and having counselled an overwhelming number of people in the area of finance, I believe investing is particularly critical for young people today. I am so happy to read that previous reviewers, in their twenties, have learned from this book and are planning for their future. If you are starting your career and in your twenties, now is the time for financial planning, even though you might not be able to put a lot of money aside, "every penny saved, is a penny earned."
There are many books on the market today on investing and financial planning. Some I would highly recommend, others are not worth the time it takes to read the book - save the money you would spend on those "guaranteed get rich quick books" and invest the money where it will guarantee a return. "Smart Couples Finish Rich" is filled with a wealth of information on money management, retirement accounts, living trusts, types of insurance and investing in general. After reading it, you will be better equiped to manage your money and save for the future. That not only makes "smart cents," it makes smart sense. Hopefully, with some financial peace of mind and stability, couples will not only finish rich, they will finish rich... together!

Extremely useful

A fantastic book that summarizes and advances the state of knowledge in learning in macroeconomics. The bulk of the treatment is on adaptive learning theory, but E&H also cover other approaches such as eductive learning. Learning is presented in the context of a good variety of macro models. I disagree with another reviewer who perceived a dearth of useful examples; the vast majority of the book is useful examples! As to the technical level, it is intended for researchers in this area or those who wish to become such, in other words, economists and economics PhD students. (Non-economists with a casual interest in this topic probably should start with more basic material.) Every macroeconomist whose research interests include economic agents’ belief formation would benefit from owning this very useful book.

vey good book for learning as a starting stage

Very good book to start learning about "learning". However, the mathematical language is not convenient especially the mathematical appendix it is very hard to understand. Not many useful examples and applications. Concentrates too much on recursive and constant gain learning and does not examine other learning algorithms.

Again, Toby Neighbors does not disappoint. This second book in the Third Prince Series is a combination of mystery, action, and adventure. It keeps the reader on his/her toes. I look forward to seeing what new adventures he will have to offer in the future.

This, like the first installment was a nice read.For me it was a bit of a disappointment.Like the first installment it went from one fight scene to the next with out the story building that I find interesting. Elkain and sidekicks are put in one battle after another without any plot development.Is he the true King?Does he want to be King? Elkain bounces from one to the other thru-out the story-line.This does nothing for me as a reader.It was the same in book one.I do like the differing religions Mr. Neighbors has composed in this series, it helps the story,as does the monks he lived his early life with. The sidekicks are outstanding and for me the heart of the story.If some of the fight scenes had been edited out and more intrigue added this is easily a five star book. I like to read about a truly EVIL villian and Mr.Neighbors never really brought forth one to despise.Yes, the villain wants to be King and will stop at nothing to get the throne, he betrays and back stabs at every turn but he never is fleshed out.I find Tooles to be one of the most interesting characters in the story and he has just a bit part.As with the first book nothing wrong with this story it's better then most. I was wanting more about the characters(sidekicks),a little better romance and a lot less fighting.The sword angle is very interesting and has been told well up to this point.Now is the time to give us the history behind it.Saying that it must be enchanted is NOT ENOUGH.I liked it but I should have loved it.

Lite Fantasy

Royal Destiny continues the tale begun with Third Prince. New characters are introduced and many more battles are fought before the story is finished. Other than Prince Elkain, few of the characters are detailed enough to tell you much beyond which fantasy archetype they fill. I would love to have learned more about the magely councilor Tooles, Fairan's rise through the ranks to general, and the sword's back story. But, alas, it seemed most of my time was spent reading detailed accounts of the various battles - exciting though they may have been, their repetition became tedious. Fortunately, becoming king involves far more than just fighting and presenting oneself to the Council and people. There are plots, betrayals, and deadly magics to fill the pages between battles. Overall, the story is interesting enough to make the time spent reading it worthwhile. Most of the ends are tied up well enough to avoid the disappointment of finishing the book, but very obvious openings are left for yet another sequel.

If you don't mind the sort of grammatical horror common in high school English papers, you'll enjoy both Third Prince and Royal Destiny immensely. A potentially epic tale like this really deserves the extra polishing of a good proofreader; Spellcheck simply cannot replace a skilled editor with a knowledge of homophones.

Brief edition is vastly different than the regular addition thought the covers look the same.

Blue bottom on front cover is brief edition & black at the bottom is the regular edition. There is a difference in the way it is set up. My professor said it was the same but when we got into studying for exams I struggled. 90% of the class was lecture so when she assigned reading I couldn't find what she was asking for. Parts of chapter 4 in the regular addition are in chapter 3 in the brief. Know which one you need for class. The covers should have more changes than a color stripe at the bottom to distinguish which book is which. Getting the wrong book will make an easy class hard. I learned the lesson the hard way so you wouldn't.

didn't know it was going to be an instructor edition, sneakkkyyyy...

the book itself is great except for the fact that the seller gave me an instructor edition! this is why i'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. they put stickers on every part where it said instructors edition. the stickers bothered me so i carefully ripped them off and it was actually an instructor edition book. luckily i was able to sell it back to my school's bookstore because it said the instructor edition is not resellable.
