A competent text for VHDL language & syntax, but not intended for hardware design. One is expected to have some design background upon using this text. Therefore, the text should have been titled as a "Syntax Guide to VHDL."
Good price, but so little to offer. My advice is to buy the "Designer's Guide to VHDL." I ended up getting this textbook to use as reference after using the student version (I sold the student version back). It is the exact same textbook with extra added feature...kinda like the Toyota Camry DLX version of the Camry platform!
Overall, there are other textbooks better than Ashenden's....ones that have more design-based examples such as a system arbiter or floppy disk controller. Earlier reviews are correct but a bit harsh.
Try VHDL Primer by J. Bhjasker. Bhasker is an IEEE chair of the HDL Interoperability Group and would an authoritative voice in the HDL community.

This Book Is Not Good For Students

This book only suitable for someone who has already had the idea of programming VHDL. It mentions only the syntax of single instructions, and lacks example circuits to simulate. The author seems don't know that students are not familiar with VHDL programming structure and need more examples to follow. After reading the whole book, I still could not succeed in compliling my VHDL scripts, and waste my time in reading error messages on VHDL simulator. Finally, I duscarded the book and bought "VHDL for Programmable Logic" as my textbook, which helps me alot but mentions little testbench programming.

Confusion compliments the title of the book

I wanted to learn VHDL so I took the initiative of buying this book since the it was a "student's" version. I thought that it would lay a strong foundation in VHDL. It turned out that this was merely a syntax guide!!! Examples were okay, but more real-world examples would have been preferred. I agree that this book is "not worth the price" for any beginner in VHDL since it would probably bring confusion rather than knowledge. I am still in search for a better text...one which will imprt a good, sound knowledge in VHDL -- caveat emptor.

SuperCompetent is a Super Important Read!

I've grown weary and leery of time management books and productivity systems that promise long but deliver short when it comes to practical ideas, tools, and strategies for the overstressed, over-committed business owner or executive. But my wife bought Stack's latest book and layed it on my desk. I read it over a long weekend and it's already made a significant impact on how I structure my time, both personally and professionally.
I particularly enjoyed her advice on how to protect my time; an area I really struggle with. I also appreciated Stack's take on how to develop a sharper focus toward that which is truly important.
Whether you're just launching your career or you're knee-deep in the hoopla of trying to run a company in these insanely crazy times, you'll pull a great deal of actionable ideas from SuperCompetent. A must read!

There's a lot of fluff in this book

This is definitely not a super-competent book. I bought it because of the glowing reviews, but that was a mistake on my part. The author no doubt has a thriving productivity consulting business, but this book definitely did NOT help me to improve my productivity.

The concept of the book seemed reasonable -- six characteristics of productive people. But I was surprised by the book contents. There was page after page after page of how to click around in Microsoft Outlook, or how to use various features for emails, meetings, planning, with general references to various websites, and so on. All pretty light stuff.

What struck me most was the large amount of text (fluff) devoted to each bullet point (many of which were merely descriptive of a situation, but not actionable in any real sense). I felt like someone brainstormed a bunch of points around a concept, and then just manufactured one or two big paragraphs (eg, a whole kindle page) talking about or around the point. I read and read and read, and could recognize (or imagine) the situations she was describing, but having understood the corporate situation she described, now what? If the author said anything much at all about the situation, it was obvious stuff.

I regret buying this book, but it's too late for me to return it to Amazon. Chalk it up to experience I guess. In contrast, if productivity is what you're after, I just finished Eat That Frog!, which is a productivity book as well. It costs about 1/4 of the SuperCompetent price, and is FAR more useful as a productivity enhancer. It contains many good productivity techniques, which are all concisely explained. No fluff in that book.

Another excellent book is How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet), probably the grandmaster time management and productivity book (although not available on Kindles, as far as I know).

Honestly, I would not recommend this SuperCompetent book to anyone. There are many far better productivity and time management books out there, for less money too.

Improve your life. This book gives you skills to reach your highest productivity.

Do you want to rise up to your best self and your highest productivity? This book can help you. On page 15, Author Laura Stack emphasizes that the "SuperCompetent know exactly why [they] work hard and what [they're] trying to achieve." On page 17, she emphasizes the power of having a "mission not an agenda . . . a mission keeps [one] from getting lost in the minutia." On page 97, she emphasizes that the SuperCompetent do not allow themselves to be distracted by various technological distractions (including Facebook, email, and YouTube.) She noted that the average American office worker loses 28% of the workday to distractions. This book is filled with strategies to improve your productivity. She even talks about how, during business travel, you can make the plane your mobile office. Laura provides action planning worksheets, and on page 209 she demonstrates the qualities of perseverance. This is a truly a helpful book.

For some reason I am drawn and redrawn to this book

I keep buying this book. My first copy never came back after lending, along with some other never returned books, to a friend's husband. Years later I found a used copy and somewhere in many moves it disappeared. Just recently decided I wanted to read it once more so purchased this copy. The mood is a bit dark and dismal as that is the current mindset of the main character at this time in his life. But there are others around him changing his outlook, bringing him to life. It is entertaining.

About the Author
Hugues Goosse is senior research associate with the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS-Belgium) and professor at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He teaches climate related topics to students from a wide range of backgrounds, including physics, geography, engineering, bioengineering, biology, Earth and environmental sciences, and philosophy. His research is mainly devoted to the development of climate models, model-data comparison and the application of models to study past, current and future climate change, analyzing both natural variability and the response to human-induced perturbations. He is currently editor and former co-chief editor of the journal Climate of the Past. He has contributed to several international programs and assessment reports, in particular to the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

About the Author

Grade 4-7-- Five stories of slaves who escaped along the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War through a variety of means. In one of the episodes, Henry Brown shipped himself as freight to Philadelphia, arriving exhausted but free. The book contains a great deal of fictionalization of thoughts, feelings, etc.--but it is all based on primary-source material, some written by the escapees themselves. Rappaport doesn't delve into the moral or political issues behind slavery; her intent is simply to show how some of its victims eluded their captors. There is an excellent bibliography, with a mix of primary, secondary, and juvenile materials. Each chapter has one black-and-white drawing. About the Author

Doreen Rappaport is well known for her groundbreaking approach to multicultural history and literature for young readers. Her many books include Victory or Death: Stories of the American Revolution; We Are The Many: A Picture Book of American Indians; and Martin’s Big Words, winner of the Jane Addams Book Award. She and her husband divide their time between New York City and a rural village in upstate New York.

Doreen Rappaport is the author of several children’s books, including American Women: Their Lives in Their Words, and Trouble at the Mines, an Honor Book for the 1988 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award.

Charles Lilly taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts for seventeen years. He has illustrated many books for children, including Freedom: A Story of the Underground Railroad.

I think that this was an interesting book to read

I am a 7th grader who was assigned this book to read as a summer reading project by my future teacher. After reading many different books on the life experiments of slaves durning the Civil War, I found this book interesting. It is about five slaves and how they managed to escape slavery. It show how brave each one of these people were in their own way. It also show how the Underground Railroad worked to help them in their escape of the in human lives that they were living along with the abuse that they suffered. The most interesting person of the five was Eliza, she also was fighting for the freedom of her baby Caroline. I think that the danger of the escape was harder for her because she was more worried about her daughter and what could happen to both of them if they were to get caught.This book kept me interested because it tells of the feeling that each one of the slaves is feeling and how they handle the next travel from one place to another. I liked the reading of the adventures that they had and how in the end they needed to adjust to a new kind of life.

This book is easy to read and is great for kids.I had never heard of Eliza and her escape through the icy night to a free state.The other narratives are just as great! When we read we can learn some thing new every day.

This is a great book for my middle school Social Studies classes. The stories are just the right length to keep my students' attention and it fits in my curriculum.

Teenaged Temptress Enslaves Her Friend's Father and Deconstructs His Life

This is the story of a man who encounters his daughter's beautiful 18-year old friend Jo, who is immediately rude to him and disdainful of him. She's so beautiful and domineering, that he can't bring himself to argue with her. She's staying at his place for a while (along with the man's daughter, who normally lived with her mother, his ex-wife), until some problem at her home is fixed. Jo gets along famously with the man's younger wife Tina, and his daughter Bobbie and, although she makes the man feel small, he can't help but fantasize about what was under her tights and knickers.

The man finds a pair of discarded pantyhose with a pair of white panties inside them laying across a pipe. He knows that they belong to Jo, and he can't resist raising them to his face and inhaling deeply. That's how Jo finds him, with his nose in her worn panties. She calls him a little pervert, and wonders aloud what his young wife would think. Then she tells him to sniff them again. She tells him that he has two seconds to put the panties on, to cover his tiny little manhood with them, or she's going to expose and ruin him. Then she makes him put on the pantyhose, and tells him that with his long hair, he looks like a pretty girl. She orders him to kneel, and to play with himself, while he tells her what he would like to do to her. He tells her he wants to kiss her down there, to worship her. She allows him to kiss her crotch through her tight blue pants, and he comes in her panties. If he's a good panty boy, she tells him, she may let him see it one day.

She tells him to take off her panties and her hose and hand-wash them for her, and replace them on the pipe where he found him. He is to hand-wash all of her underwear for her while she stays here.

The man tries to have sex with his wife Tina, but he comes almost immediately, as he thinks of Jo. Tina tells him that he's pathetic, and looks at him with contempt.

As the story progresses, Jo's torment of the man intensifies, and her influence over the women in his life increases. Soon, he's calling her Miss, running baths for her, and getting her off with his mouth. She tells him that his wife is a slut, that she wants to have sex with young studs, and that he was going to encourage her to do so.

Jo proceeds to feminize the man, and to fill his wife's head with thoughts of virile young men lusting after her body. The man is drawn ever deeper into Jo's web, and it isn't clear if his relationships with his wife and daughter will survive what she has planned for him.

This is a terrific read.
