Khurram Murad (1932-96) was formerly Director General of the Islamic Foundation (1978-86). He studied civil engineering at the Universities of Karachi and Minnesota, USA, and worked as a leading consulting engineer at Karachi, Dhaka, Tehran and Riyadh. Actively involved in the Islamic movement since 1948, he was the President, Islamic Jami'at-e-Talabah, Pakistan, and Amir of its Dhaka and Lahore branches.

This is by far my favorite Islamic book, one that I've now read several times and love gifting to other Muslims who may be seeking a deeper connection with their religion. It is exactly what it says it is - a book about spiritual and self-development, and it tells you how to develop yourself and your connection with God in a very easy to understand, almost step-by-step manner. That isn't to say it's elementary, just that the tips it offers aren't too conceptual, and are very easy to implement into daily life.

This book discusses Practical Faith - Incorporating faith and spirituality into every aspect of one's life. I must admit, it is reminiscent of 'The Secret', but far better and more rooted in the true purpose of life. It is unfortunate that the book is not available on Amazon, though it can be easily found in an online Islamic bookstore. Just google the title and author.

About the Author

SEAL Team 3 Chief Chris Kyle (1974–2013) was awarded two Silver Stars, five Bronze Stars with Valor, and numerous other citations. Following four combat tours in Iraq, he became chief instructor for training Naval Special Warfare sniper teams. He is the author of American Gun: A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms. A native Texan, Kyle is survived by his wife, Taya, and their two children.

Scott McEwen is a trial lawyer in San Diego.

Jim DeFelice is the co-author of Chris Kyle’s #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper. He also is the author of Omar Bradley: General at War, the first in-depth critical biography of America’s last five-star general, and the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Code Name: Johnny Walker: The Extraordinary Story of the Iraqi Who Risked Everything to Fight with the U.S. Navy SEALs. When I first posted this review, there were roughly 3000 other reviews and many 1 and 2 star reviews. Most of the low rated reviews were from folks posting negative comments that had not even read the book. They were obviously against the war, didn't like the military, etc. Some of these comments are offensive, at least too me they were. I made a point to bring this to the attention of potential buyers of Chris's book so they wouldn't let the low ratings affect their decision to read, what I think is a very good story. I think this is important to point out and that's why I am including it here. The point here is to be helpful to others. So, with that said, I'd like to update this review a little bit now that over 5000 folks have had the opportunity to read it and leave their reviews, which seem to be a little more objective. I still disagree with others that claim this book is "poorly written". I think Chris, with help of course, did a pretty darn good job describing his experiences. This book was written by a Navy SEAL. Not Tom Clancy. This book is written in what I would call a sort of "conversational style". In other words, he writes like he talks. He is telling you a story or collection of them. I found his honesty refreshing. He makes no bones about the fact that he loves his job. He wasnt the best father or husband at times. He doesnt like politics, etc. I liked his sense of humor (I caught myself laughing out loud at times). I especially liked his discussion on his gear and weapons. It's interesting to read about what sort of equipment someone needs to survive in that kind of environment. He put things in his book that he was constantly asked about. Thats why they are there. The book also has some decent maps and photographs. This is not a book for everyone. One reviewer said the book was too "technical" and he couldnt follow it. Another said it was written by someone in "grade school". You can see by those two comments how differently this book will be viewed. This is a story of a man that goes to war, as he was trained to do. He had to make life and death decisions almost everyday. It's easy to sit in a nice comfortable home, and second guess him but the bottom line is that I am quite sure the men that served next to him were glad he was there. So all I can say is if you are interested in the life of a Navy SEAL, grab it. If not, why would you condsider it in the first place? Chris Kyle, rest in peace and God bless the men and woman who serve, and have served, this country.

Husband, Father, Hero and Friend

Chris and Taya were our next door neighbors for most of the time the events in this book were taking place. While Chris has sanitized many of the events he was involved with, the book offers a seldom seen look into the trials and pains that American Forces, especially or SEALS endure along with their family and friends. There are no politics in this book, just a saga of the human side of war and conflict. For me it was a must read and for Chris, I'm sure it was way of purging nightmares and letting the public see that the men who protect us are just as human as we are.

Good first person perspective from Chris Kyle

I wish I would have read the book first before watching the film. Some inaccuracies with the film or complete sequences that were skipped which played an important role in Chief Kyle's journey.

I enjoy the humor (twisted or not) sprinkled throughout the book. It gives you a no BS view of the world through a SEAL's eyes. His descriptions of BUDS and being overseas gives you a great visual for what it is like to be in those situations.

Towards the end of the book, it starts to change from a first hand account of events to a more personal opinion about his personal life, military life, and the people encountered in between.

Definitely an entertaining read. Keep in mind, it is a book written by a Navy SEAL, not a John Grisham novel so writing style may not match the gravity of the stories told. They are all important though for an American military legend.

Not her best...

On a bad day, Rosamunde Pilcher is still a really good writer. But I have to say, it wasn't such a great day when she was writing this one. While books like this are all about happy endings, the twists and turns of the plot in this one are so obvious that halfway through, I could pretty much have told you the entire rest of the story. That might be ok if the characters themselves had any depth or complexity, but they're all pretty much stock characters... the one with the broken heart, the child with uncaring parents, and so on. You could take them out of any other novel, mix them up, and there you are. Not that I didn't enjoy the book... I did, but it's probably the worst of her full length novels. Start with something else; read this when you've run out of other ones.

Pilcher is one of the greats!

This is not Rosamunde Pilcher's best novel, but Pilcher at less than her best still is better than 99% of most other writers. All of Mrs. Pilcher's loyal fans will greet WINTER SOLSTICE like a long lost friend, combining as the book does all of those elements that Rosamunde Pilcher presents so beautifully. There are the endearing characters, the lyrical descriptions of the countryside, the piercing insights. SOLSTICE is, unfortunately, a bit linear on plot, a bit predictable and a bit uncomplicated, but Mrs. Pilcher's writing nonetheless elevates this novel to something special. The largest hole in the story is the fact that when a devastating tragedy strikes one of the characters in the autumn, that character largely recovers and builds an entire new life by Christmas. Tragedy is a classic technique to motivate a story, and Mrs. Pilcher has used such tragedy more successfully in the past. Yet the speed with which the character here regroups simply isn't believable. Still, I will take Mrs. Pilcher at a mediocre level any day over hundreds of other authors at their personal bests.

As all Pilcher fans know, you just cannot go wrong if you read this author. Not if you are willing to be TOLD a story...reading one of Rosamunde Pilcher's books isn't like reading a novel at all. It's like having a favorite aunt spin you a yarn. Bless her, she even got this book out in time for me to take it on vacation. There's nothing like the way she puts words together. You will increase your vocabulary, learn great Brittish lingo too. Many of her phrases say it better than we do on this side of the big water. I'd rather "peg out" my laundry any day! Buy this book. It's a delicious read. Even if I did guess right at almost every plot development, spending a week with Rosie is a treat indeed. Love you Elfrida and Oscar! Can I come to the wedding? HOPE YOU HAVE STARTED YOUR NEXT BOOK, MRS. PILCHER!!

About the Author

Lyn Paine is an experienced teacher trainer who has taught dance to all ages and has led training for the National Dance Teachers Association and AQA awarding body. Lyn has written several dance resources and also many dance programmes for BBC Education. She has directed schools’ dance performances at the Bournemouth International Centre and Royal Albert Hall. She also has worked on many other inspiring cross-arts and cross-cultural projects for children.

Good DELE practice

After reading a blog post about this book versus another study guide, I chose this one and am glad that I did. It not only has sample tests (for each part of the exam), but goes in depth to teach you HOW to take this test. Beyond knowing advanced grammar and vocabulary, having a good ear and quick reading skills, you should really get a feel for what is expected of you during the test--just like you would with the SAT or ACT, for example.

This book revolves around practice modules that mimic skills you will need for the exam--like pulling out synonyms and common concepts to help you rule out wrong answers. (It seems that at this level, one's success comes down to recognizing nuances and having an acute understanding of advanced vocabulary. When you have no idea what a word means, and you have to rely on context alone, the book helps to teach you ways around that.)

It's definitely helping me gauge what areas I need to work on more and helping me brush up on my Spanish across the board. Plus, the online portal has other resources that are helpful to you overall study process.

I would definitely recommend it.

Some of the directions are not completely clear on the practice exercises, but it has lots of guides and three practice tests for each section, organized as the real test would be. I did get a tutor to help assess my written and speaking practice. **Make sure you check out the corrections on the website listed in the book! My version had a BUNCH of errors, including a whole section of the answer key!
