Practically identical to the 6th edition, but still an awesome book.

The 7th edition is nearly indistinguishable from the 6th edition. The only notable difference is the 7th edition has 44 additional pages (866 vs. 822) and 20-40% more illustrations - albeit these 'new' illustrations are associated with the same 'old' questions found identically in the 6th edition. To put it another way, the literary content has not changed - it just looks prettier. When I compared the two editions with acrobat pro, I was only able to find a handful of instances where new content was added.

If you already own the 6th edition, feel free to navigate away from this page - you don't need to purchase this version.
If you don't own this book, I would highly recommend purchasing it - it may not be the greatest study-aid for your shelf exam (too much technical detail), but it WILL save you the humiliation of being pimped to death on your rotation.

Good reference for getting "pimped"

This book is a good reference for all of those questions the surgeon asks students in the OR. This book is not helpful for the NBME Shelf.

I had an older version to look at as well, and they were pretty much identical. Thus, you can save money and get the older version.

it was very useful for looking up a couple facts before going into ...

A must if you have a surgery rotation coming up. It wasn't too helpful for me for the shelf exam at the end of the rotation, however, it was very useful for looking up a couple facts before going into a surgery. Downside is that the book is kind of heavy and it weighs your white coat down, but I think you will be behind other classmates if you don't utilize it.

About the Author

Nilanjan Ray Chaudhuri received his Ph.D. degree from Imperial College London, UK. His research interests include power system dynamics and control, application of power electronics in power systems, online system identification, FACTS, HVDC, and renewable energy systems. He serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. Nilanjan is a member of the WECC’s HVDC modeling Task Force, multiple CIGRE’ subcommittees, a member of the IEEE, IEEE PES, CIGRE’ and Sigma Xi.

Balarko Chaudhuri is a Senior Lecturer in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London, UK. His areas of expertise include electric power transmission systems, control theory, smart grids and renewable energy. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Systems Journal and Elsevier Control Engineering Practice. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Rajat Majumder did his PhD in Power Systems at Imperial College London, UK. He specializes in power system analysis, modeling and control design, with special emphasis on dynamic stability issues in large interconnected power grids involving HVDC and FACTS. He is serving as an editorial board member of Institute of Engineering Technology’s (IET) Proceedings of Generation, Transmission and Distribution. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Amirnaser Yazdani is an Associate Professor with Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. From 2006 to 2011, he was an Assistant Professor with the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, and prior to that he was with Digital Predictive Systems (DPS) Inc., Mississauga, Canada, active in the design and production of power converters for wind energy systems. Dr. Yazdani has extensive industry and academic experience in design, modeling, and analysis of switching power converters and railway signaling systems, and has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada, and a co-author of the book Voltage-Sourced Converters in Power Systems, published by IEEE/Wiley Press, 2010.

A Treatise on the Use of Force

Here is a book that is not exactly a novel, not exactly a history, not exactly an adventure tale; in fact, the main character is literally three tons of finely worked brass. I prefer to view the work as an examination of the use of force. Not being particularly well read or skilled in military strategy, I will leave it to other reviewers to judge as to whether it succeeds as an exposition of method but I will say that it was a very interesting read.

The Gun is, of course, the force. Dropped along a mountain road by a retreating army it is picked up by Spanish guerillas fighting against the French occupation of Spain and the later history of the Gun becomes the book. What is startlingly modern about this book is that it demonstrates conclusively that war requires the will to match forces. When one side is allowed to retain an advantage the fighting concludes. For some reason not quite explained, the French have been allowed uncontested possession of a fertile plain in the south of Spain. When guerillas manage to obtain this huge piece of artillery, figure out how to obtain ammunition, as well as how to move the thing, they promptly upset the balance of power by assaulting the hitherto untouchable French fortifications. Their efforts throw both sides into disarray. The Gun provides a focus to the Spanish attack as well as the necessary power to press the advantage. Instructively, the very existence and control of power, i.e. the weapon, is itself the source of further power--the allegiance of other irregulars who are emboldened by their newfound ability to succeed. Perhaps some readers find the denouement of the book somewhat unsettling. The ending is quite abrupt. But by the time you reach the end you realize that you have been exposed to various styles of leadership--some more successful than others, various kinds of battle--again with varying degrees of success, siegecraft, the use of artillery, etc. Forester is a gifted author--his narrative decisions are purposeful and directed towards an end that seems to be lost on many readers. In my opinion the author's purpose was to use this interesting episode in a very long conflict to invite debate on leadership styles and the very nature of war itself.

I found the book fascinating and it has sparked a desire to read more military history as it is clear that as a country and people we Americans at least are continuing to place ourselves into situations that require an historical context in order to understand the value of the position. Absent a context in history, we risk being diverted from worthly goals by a cost that is misunderstood. Wars are fought for a reason that has not disappeared with the rise of modern technology. We cannot win merely by churning out fantastic weaponry--"The Gun" teaches that it is not enough to merely possess force, once must understand how best to press the advantage thereby created.

Another Classic from Forester

I'm a huge C.S. Forester fan, so you will know where I'm coming from as I write this. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would, but I shall round up. The only negative aspect of this short novel is the very thing that makes it quite unique; instead of having a compelling charector such as Hornblower, Captain Peabody or Rifleman Dodd, the central charactor is... you guessed it... a gun. I certainly did not find this story as compelling as some of his other works (since it is somewhat difficult for a gun to be compelling), but I did appreciate it as a different approach to the story of war. The story begins and ends with "the gun" and follows the many charactors whose lives revolve around it. If you like either C.S. Forester or War Stories in general, I highly recommend this tale.

One interesting note; I just read this in the first edition published in America (right in the middle of WWII); it was great to have it compared to the Hornblower "Trilogy." Even though I've always become sad when ending the Hornblower series, I am so grateful that Forester returned to write many more than the original "Trilogy." C.S. Forester is dead... Long live C.S. Forester!

Good Lord, That Twist!

Ever read a book that leaves you speechless - and not in a good way?

I'm struggling a bit with this review because I really like to concentrate on the good whenever I can. So, here we go...It's different.

In the beginning, we have some basic dystopia with a few interesting elements. The author(s) got me really curious about this world. I wanted to know more about it. Unfortunately, though, the world building is sparse and I never really felt any authenticity. Every time Deedra would say something or question something about her world, I found that I simply never believed it.

And then there was Rose.

Oh, how I wish I could tell you Rose's secret and let you in on the big twist. I can't. I can only say that I hated it, I didn't believe it, and I couldn't get past it. I'm good with weird. I'm not so good with utterly ridiculous. Guess which side of the fence this falls on?

I can't recommend this book. It reads like an idea a few guys had while sitting around the bar, thinking "This will make a great book!"

I'm sorry. It doesn't.

Dark look into the far future

AFTER THE RED RAIN is a dark, dreary look at a far distant dystopian future. People have forgotten the details but in the far past, half the world's population - 50 billion people - were wiped off the face of the earth.

In the future, everyone accepts the status quo - power hungry magistrates, deadly air and water conditions, everyone except the elite being on starvation diets. The endless cities are rubble with people living in the ruins. Protagonist Deedra Ward lives in a tiny apartment and works at a factory, assembling parts to earn food ration coupons.

One day, while out scavenging, she saves a beautiful young man named Rose and her life is changed forever.

I liked the idea behind the story. It just lost a lot in translating it to the page. There were many spots where the story dragged. And I just wasn't convinced about the romantic turns the story took.

I wanted more worldbuilding in the tale, more details about the people and the whys of the apocalypse. And I wanted more character development of the main characters - they were pretty one dimensional.

It was readable but rather boring.

Dark and gloomy but oh-so-absorbing...

I've been making a habit of randomly picking up books that I see on Instagram and reading them without even having read the blurb. It's been a fun experiment and so far AFTER THE RED RAIN has probably been one of my favorites. It has one of the best opening chapters I've read in ages. I actually started it while sitting in a waiting room and had to hold back all the winces and pained faces I wanted to make... then a few days later I read it out loud to my husband. The next night as I sat reading he asked me how my morbid book was going. lol

So if you want to jump into a read that's dark and dreary and a little depressing I definitely recommend picking up AFTER THE RED RAIN. If you enjoy romantic sub-plots, however, this is also deeply satisfying on that level. Where I feel it really shines though is as a science fiction parable with a focus on ecology. This is one YA world you won't want to live in.

Deedra is strangely naive and I honestly found her tough to like at times. In contrast Rose is very intriguing and about as mysterious as a character can get. Without spoiling anything I'll just say that I really, really hope there will be further books to follow because I still have so many questions about him. Most of the secondary characters play vital but small roles in the storyline.

On the whole, this is a book that is really fast-paced and engrossing with it's only major flaw being that it might have had a few too many fingers involved in the plotting. If you're at all into YA scifi and post-apocalyptic I'd definitely suggest you check it out.

Great for the beginning to intermediate investor!

If you have an underlined copy of Security Analysis (Ben Graham's 700 page treatise on value investing) sitting on your desk or you are a professional money manager you may or may not find this book interesting. But if you are a beginner to intermediate investor who is interested in getting a quick basic course in how to read financial statements from a Warren Buffett perspective it is the perfect book.

I'm a professional with $500 million under management and I got a couple of good ideas out of it. But at this stage of my career getting a couple of good ideas on how to make more money is just fine with me. It only takes a couple of great ideas to get rich and even fewer to stay rich. Their book the New Buffettology, which was published in 2002, is aimed more at the professional investor and many people in the investment business use it. But I would say this book is for that beginning to intermediate group that really are a little in the dark about what to look for in a company's financial statements. And it focuses on what to look for if you are like Buffett and looking for a company with a Durable Competitive Advantage. Also it is a quick and easy read - unlike Graham's Security Analysis which most people buy but never read - try reading 700 pages on how to read a financial statement and see how far you get before you nod off with boredom. Quick and easy can be a good thing for great many investors.

Am I glad I bought it? Yes. Would I recommend it to my friends that aren't professionals? Yes. Would I recommend it to professionals? Yes, but don't expect to get more than a few good ideas out of it.

About the Author
Serena Nanda is professor emeritus of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her most recent book is THE GIFT OF THE BRIDE: A TALE OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MATRIMONY, AND MURDER, a novel set in an Indian immigrant community in New York City. Her other published works include NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN: THE HIJRAS OF INDIA, winner of the 1990 Ruth Benedict Prize; AMERICAN CULTURAL PLURALISM AND LAW; GENDER DIVERSITY: CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATIONS; and a New York City guidebook, NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER: 40 PERFECT DAYS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. She has always been captivated by the stories people tell and by the tapestry of human diversity. Anthropology was the perfect way for her to immerse herself in these passions, and through teaching, to spread the word about the importance of understanding both human differences and human similarities.

Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Texas State University-San Marcos. His published works include ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORY: AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY and SACRED REALMS: ESSAYS IN RELIGION, BELIEF, AND SOCIETY, as well as journal articles on commerce, religion, and ethnic identity in West Africa; African exploration and romanticism; and African veterans of French colonial armed forces. Warms's interests in anthropology were kindled by college courses and by his experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. He has traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, and Asia. He continues to teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology every year but also teaches classes in anthropological theory, the anthropology of religion, economic anthropology, and film at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His current projects include an encyclopedia of theory in social and cultural anthropology and a book about the development of anthropology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A truly adult novel, and that's high praise.

Stegner is already an eminence and he doesn't need my Amazon review to rest comfortably, but . . . this is one of those rare adult novels that deals tenderly and honestly with adult life -- the struggle for money and reputation, the shifting dynamics and tensions between two couples; how one recovers (if one does) from a major illness, how one faces death. It is a book for grownups, only because nineteen-year olds would have no idea of what the author describes, and how hard life is even for fairly privileged people in academia. I found it very moving and, as you can tell, difficult to describe. Early on in my reading, the characters were seriously real to me, so that I ached for them and felt attached to them. It's an outstanding book, but I fear it not flashy enough to warrant postmodern critical notice, although Stegner does shift both perspective and time. He creates a world -- no, several worlds.

A respectul, but dissenting, view

I appreciate that many reviewers have judged the book positively. But, along with eight of our nine-member book club, I find the writing self-indulgent and -- perhaps given Stegner's home in academia -- consciously ornate. A key character exposes her controlling personality and unfolding role in the narrative in the very first chapter, leaving only this reader's boredom and mild curiosity as to how the entire plot comes together at the end of the book. I would suggest that the novel's most useful contribution might be as an illustration of how, at a certain point in the country's literary tasteand for whatever reason, the book could have prompted so many critics to have fallen over themselves in adulation.

Bizarre

Characters were underdeveloped. Settings were were woven in and out of countries and decades in a most unsatisfying way. He always stopped short of giving characters enough dialogue or detail to make you care about them. The detail he paid to scenery was the opposite---10 times more developed than the main characters. Part II started with an abrupt switch to a lengthy talk with Hallie and Moe. There were pages and pages of writing about their kids and grandkids but to what end? These were not the characters we cared about. It felt like he was trying to too hard to imitate Steinbeck's East of Eden with its lush landscapes and quirky characters. Would not recommend this bizarre read!
