About the Author

William J. Bottega is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers University, where he has been since 1984. He received his Ph.D. in applied mechanics from Yale University, his M.S. in theoretical and applied mechanics from Cornell University, and his B.E. from the City College of New York. He also spent several years in R&D at General Dynamics where he worked on vibration and sound-structure interaction problems. In addition, Dr. Bottega is the author of numerous archival publications on various areas of theoretical and applied mechanics.

About the Author

Dorinda Neave is a senior lecturer in Art History at Capilano University, North Vancouver, Canada. Dorinda received a B.A. from Manchester University U.K. and a post-graduate certificate in Education from Keele University, U.K. before completing an M.A at the University of Victoria, Canada. She currently teaches courses in visual culture and Asian art at Capilano University. Her research interests include contemporary Japanese performance art and women in Japanese art as artists, patrons and subjects. Neave’s articles have been published in a variety of journals such as Art Journal and Woman’s Art Journal. She has traveled widely throughout Japan and in 2009 was a summer visiting scholar at Nichibunken (International Research Centre for Japanese Studies) in Kyoto.

 

Lara C. W. Blanchard is Luce Associate Professor of East Asian Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York, where she teaches courses in art history, Asian studies, and women’s studies. She received a B.A. from the College of William & Mary and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her research interests focus on Chinese pictorial arts, especially of the Song through Ming dynasties (960-1644) and the contemporary era, and include women as artists and patrons, the construction of gender, text-image relationships, and theories of representation. Her articles have appeared in journals such as Ars Orientalis and Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China. She has traveled throughout mainland China and studied Chinese art, language, and calligraphy in Taipei.

 

Marika Sardar is Associate Curator of Southern Asian and Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art. Marika studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU where she completed a doctoral dissertation on the architecture of Golconda, a fortified city in the Deccan, India. She has also worked in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and her research has embraced architecture, archaeology, painting, textiles, and trade. Publications include essays in several books about the Deccan and in the catalogue The Interwoven Globe: Worldwide Textile Trade, 1500–1800 (2013). She was co-editor of Sultans of the South: Arts of India’s Deccan Courts, 1323-1687 (2011).

A Book with a Dark Secret

The publication of this book was anxiously awaited. There hasn’t been a comprehensive Asian art textbook since Sherman Lee’s ancient tome that used terms like “Oriental” for artifacts and cultures alike, the Asianist equivalent of “primitive art” books. Those old books are fascinating as artifacts themselves but extremely time-consuming to teach with as you constantly have to stop and explain to students those dusty terms that 19th century people used to talk about art from east of Suez and south of the Nile’s First Cataract. So imagine a 21st century professor’s excitement at the prospect of a new Asian Art textbook, one written by women no less, some of them with actual Asian ancestry! (Not that an author's membership in either of those is a requirement).

Zipping through our advance desk copies, we are immediately impressed by the canonical works discussed and illustrated but also by the inclusion of modern and even contemporary art of Asia…and of the Diaspora, too! Asian Art’s Introduction alone is tremendously useful as it draws on Asian literary classics, philosophy and folklore to explain major concepts in aesthetics. The omission of an important artwork here or there is easily forgiven if we are to finally get a nice new textbook to replace the old Orientalist Lee book or the admittedly good and inexpensive but prohibitively numerous (half dozen) Thames & Hudson books (one for each Asian region) some of us have been using in lieu of Lee. So we approve the new Asian Art textbook and draft it into immediate service. All seems right with the semester.

…until in the later parts of otherwise very nicely written/illustrated chapters on Buddhist art in India and Southeast Asia we notice a troubling, repeated omission. Where is the ornate and iconographically complex Pala art of Bengal-Bihar that extended Buddhist India's reach deep into the eastern tropics, the snowy Himalayas, and into the second millennium? In a forgiving mood, we shake off the foreboding and barrel ahead.

But finally, the magnitude of the omission becomes clear when we try to cross from India into neighboring Tibet and Nepal. Bengal and Bihar are the bridge to the Himalayas and the bridge is out!

Given that the iconography and style of Pala Buddhist art informed the foundation of Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist art, it’s a punishing climb to Himalayan art without Bihar and Bengal. And Himalayan art itself? How is IT treated in this feverishly awaited volume? Tibet is nowhere to be found; not in the illustrations! For this massive subject of Buddhist (and Bon) art, there is no chapter at all. And when we search the Index desperately, like dying climbers on the shoulders of Mt. Kailash, for even honorary mentions of what is arguably the richest iconographic tradition in Buddhist Asia we find almost nothing. Nepal had a single entry. Bhutan too, one. Tibet is mentioned four times, once for its language, once for it geographical location (as part of China), once for the fact that Mongolian invaders of China practiced the Shakya (Sa skya) branch of Tibetan Buddhism, and once, bizarrely, for an 8th century polo match that it lost to China.

The fact that in that same century a Buddhist debate was held at Samye Monastery in Tibet to determine which branch of Buddhism Tibet would adopt once and for all and that the Indian debaters handed the Chinese debaters their collective butt, before the Tibetan king handed them their proverbial hats thenceforth adopting Indian Buddhism for his country is not mentioned…even though it is a far more germane topic to the development of Asian art and culture than polo...

Awestruck by the brazen Bengali-Himalayan omission we are left to fend for ourselves when teaching the essential topic of Himalayan art. For an Asian art history course without Tibet and Nepal is like Indian food without cumin or coriander, like Thai pagodas without gold. There is not a single sand mandala in this book! There is not a single thangka. The word doesn’t even appear in the index, nor do “dorje” or “chorten”! And the one chorten that is illustrated in the book is the Mongolian "White Stupa" in Beijing.

When you discover that an essential part of something is missing, you can experience a strange mix of incredulity, awe and confusion. When you discover that even the pathways and bridges to the missing thing are also missing, you get downright suspicious, even angry. Robert Thurman, Steven Kossak, Jane Casey Singer, Pratapaditya Pal will all tell you that Tibetan art owes a lot to Nepal and that Nepal owes a lot to Bengal-Bihar. They are in effect an ancestral line with Tibet at the end so by eliminating either Bengal/Bihar or Nepal, you can eliminate Tibet, or said another way, if you want to neatly eliminate Tibet, eliminate the evolutionary lines that lead to it.

In the classroom the professor has to scramble to deal with the omission. Quickly, s/he scurries about to find a PDF and adjusting the PowerPoint on the subject as to supplement the loss to students...and to make the course worthy of the tuition and textbook fees. And now, instead of explaining why Sherman Lee still calls people “Oriental” the professor must try and explain why Tibetan art and its Indo-Himalayan ancestors are missing entirely from the textbook. The professor admits ignorance or otherwise points out some interesting facts about the publishing business.

The course stops for 10 minutes to discuss the expansion of Pearson Education to Pearson Education Asia and the dozens of locations of Pearson Education China especially (by far Pearson's greatest Asian focus). Students and professor begin to wonder if Chinese politics is the reason why the book Asian Art has turned out to be the proverbial “six for a nine.” They also wonder if the authors of a book called Asian Art CHOSE to omit the essential chapters on Tibet and its ancestral line (without explanation thereof in the Intro or Preface) or if they were compelled to do so by parties above their pay grade or across the Pacific Ocean. Some begin to bristle at the possibility that a foreign nation can induce a publisher in New Jersey to cheat American students of key parts of their art history education…

About the Author

Frederick Parker was born in Hungary and escaped communist rule in 1949 when he immigrated to Australia. He received his degree in industrial engineering at the University of New South Wales. After moving to America, he specialized in manufacturing management and turnaround situations for several hi-tech companies, including corporate strategies for international companies.

Parker was general manager of a large international telecommunication company in Silicon Valley, in charge of 1,200 employees, shipping $500 million of hi-tech equipment from a 300,000-square-foot factory. He achieved 55 percent gross margins. When he was promoted to corporate vice president of operations, he was asked to research and formulate the manufacturing strategy for this international corporation. At that time, the company had factories all over the world. In that strategic role, Parker studied the latest trends in world-class manufacturing before implementing his plans for the corporation.

Parker also built and managed factories in Mexico and later as vice president of operations took part of taking a company public. The year after that public offering, the company’s stock was the largest percentage gainer on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Before retiring and writing this book, Parker consulted for several companies that relied on his expertise of new product introduction and cost reduction.

Strategy +Teamwork is based on his 40 years of experience in manufacturing management and his strong desire to pass on the wisdom he gained in confronting difficult problems in the competitive global environment. Parker is consulting part time and lives in San Diego with his wife and has two children and three grandchildren.

He also wrote a book on bridge, Win at Duplicate Bridge, and he enjoys playing bridge, golf, chess, and writing articles.

Small But Packs A Powerful Punch.

This little powerful book of rituals works!! although I have yet to work with Belphegor, I have done this ritual with Lucifer and received amazing results, let me give you an example I'm in the process of looking for a house to buy, tired of renting and after doing my rituals to Lucifer I started seeing ads in the paper like 1200 down, 600.00 a month, exactly what I'm paying now for rent. also I have been having money literally appearing out of nowhere mind you not great sums, but finding 20.00 bucks here and there, money that was owed is now coming in, this lets me know my doing rituals to increase my cash flow is already in the works and I'm getting more clients for readings, what I love about the author S. Connolly she keeps it real, she does not sell false hope she knows her stuff, any kind of magic must be based in reality you will not run like Usain Bolt is your a paraplegic, you might get up and stand maybe even take a few steps. demons work fast and you must approach them with the utmost respect .while its a small book, it packs a powerful punch.

It's okay, very short and to the point but doesn't go into much depth on any subject. It's basically just a handbook of common sense with some simple magic thrown in. Which is not to say that it's useless or you should not get it. It's very useful.
