The Wild West has made legends out of many men and women through the embellishment of their stories, but it was Buffalo Bill Cody who truly brought the Wild West to life and provided the images that people still associate with the 19th century West today. Though he had a long career that spanned service in the Civil War, trapping, and even a stint with the Pony Express, Buffalo Bill eventually became synonymous with his world-famous Wild West Show. By depicting stereotypical Western scenes like riding the Pony Express, and gunfights between cowboys and Indians, Buffalo Bill became one of the men most responsible for establishing how the public remembered the Wild West, and the show influenced subsequent film and literature. The show also featured several kinds of activities that are still part of rodeos today, including riding bucking broncos, roping livestock, and target shooting.
Wild West Shows were popular in America during the late 19th century, but it was Buffalo Bill who would make it popular overseas and truly master the art of showmanship. Employing famous figures of the era, including Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull, Buffalo Bill managed to make national celebrities out of his show’s participants, while also deftly promoting himself as the ultimate showman and making himself one of the most famous figures of the Wild West in the process. With plenty of experience shooting bison and riding for the Pony Express, Buffalo Bill would also participate as a cowboy in his own show, and it was even said he played the part of George Custer for Custer’s Last Stand. Buffalo Bill’s show, and his own legend, eventually turned him into a dime novel hero himself.

Warts & All An Interactive Biography of Buffalo Bill Cody A Must-Read for Insight into the Wild West

Length: 66 pages.
As with many of my other Charles River Editors booklets, I got this while it was a free download through an Amazon KDP promotion.
At the outset, though, I will state that I am a descendent (through my father's mother) of Buffalo Bill's sister May. Cody's last days were spent with May in Denver, Colorado. Thanks to my brother, Robert, are extended for his Herculean tenacity using Ancestry.com to finally establish what my grandmother told us was indeed fact.
My point is, although I am no great historian, I have read many books on the Wild West and, in particular, on Buffalo Bill Cody. Indeed, one son and a dog I once had, both were named for my great-great Uncle.
So, what do I think of this interactive biography?
Despite the matter-of-fact claims regarding the taking of the first scalp for Custer that the story was greatly embellished just for spreading his fame, I found many reasons to rate this as a must-read.
Before proceeding, though, I must offer a source to get the full story of The First Scalp for Custer, the book ny Paul L. Hedren. Just as Hedren, I have visited the monument in what used to be Montrose, Nebraska.
Okay, aside from the controversial short shrift that this booklet gives to the account, I did thoroughly enjoy reading this brief synopsis. Seeing the pics of Cody, Sitting Bull and Annie Oaklet was nice, but the video clips embedded into An Interactive Biography, were a brilliant stroke that I have long awaited writers and publishers to incorporate.
Only one of the clips has audio, which makes that clip superior to the other clips. The video of Annie Oakley displaying her marksmanship was another highlight.
In that only so much can be included in so short a booklet as this, I still wish there had been mention of the showman trying desperately to gain admittance to visit Sitting Bull while he was under dire threats.
Also would have loved reading of the encounter between Cody and Wild Bill at about the same time as The First Scalp, which was only weeks before Hickok was murdered in Deadwood, South Dakota. Perhaps it is only I who realizes the threesome was so brutally pared down to one survivor. At hat, in fact, that sole survivor very narrowly escaped the fate of his two comrades who served together less than 10 years previously. Facts such as that should have Ben included.
Another great point within this classic was the video of the Sioux Ghost Dance.
So, warts and all, An Interactive Biography of Buffalo Bill Cody is one of my favorite history books of the Wild West. A Must-Read for any historian or for anybody wanting to understand how Buffalo Bill Cody, aka William Frederick Cody, became the most beloved adventurer of his time.
