A Chilling and Haunting Little Tale

Reading a novella like this is like watching a great little movie late at night. It was a couple of hours of intense reading and mystery with characters that are immediately interesting and somehow lost in life's tougher tragedies, a terribly abusive husband (the murderer), a stillborn birth that almost destroys a distraught mother, accidents waiting to happen to young curious children on a large estate where there is a lake and leaky boats. It all happens in an old and almost abandoned and yet manicured estate in France. It reminded me of the setting for horror shows from my youth where there are boogeymen hiding in the shadows. The elderly mother is in a wheel chair and is formally caring for her middle aged children who have come to recuperate from their recent tragedies and yet she isn't really emotionally available to them, somewhat mystified by their immature and stupid lives. The main character, "the woman" seems like she is dying and trying to get her children set up with their inheritances and perhaps even to recruit her brother to become their parents since her life is basically over.

The crazy and perhaps most terrifying element of the story is that the mother of the stillborn is literally hanging on to the dead baby and won't let it go to the point where the baby is going rancid and disintegrating. There is some kind of metaphor here for the state of the family, hanging on to something that has long since died.

And yet, by the end, there is a plan and redemption and we pretty much have a successful future course that will work for everyone.........and yet, do we and will it really work?

I love the novella. It's a great little escape into a very complex and yet believable world laid out very poetically.

Beautiful Language but Ultimately Disappointing

Ms. Leigh's writing has a rich and visual style. It's almost as though you are walking with the characters in the surreal atmosphere which pervades this novella.

I enjoyed the writing and I kept hoping, and hoping.... that the story would evolve to something more, something beyond the same story line and premise from which the book begins.

Without giving away too much of the plot, a brother and sister find themselves together at their mother's chateau after not having been there together for over a decade. The sister, referred to as 'the woman' throughout the book is escaping an abusive marriage. Her brother, Marcus, is dealing with the aftermath of the birth of a stillbotn baby after trying, with his wife, to get pregnant for many years. He is also dealing with his mistress, a young woman who calls him often on his cell phone but is never given her own character except as a young girl on scholarship. His wife, Sophie, can not bear to part with her dead infant who she carries with her as though she were still living. 'The woman's' son is conniving to get back to his father who has battered his mother. His sister appears passive and non-reactive.

The language is beautiful. I felt like I was there. However, the book could and should have been so much more. I was disappointed as it went on and on and on with no real change. I love Ms. Leigh's style and await her next book. I also intend to read her first book, 'Hunger'.

Fenge and Pestieau examine the implicit taxes on prolonged working life from normative and political economy perspectives. They discuss optimal payroll tax rates that minimize distortions of labor supply and retirement decisions and consider alternative ways to finance benefits, including consumption and capital income taxation. They discuss why policies are designed to discourage employment among older workers and why reforms to counter this often meet resistance. They demonstrate, contrary to the belief of many European governments, that pushing older workers into retirement does not free jobs for young unemployed workers. They show that the gap between salaries and productivity is an incentive for employers to rid themselves of older workers and argue that governments should not support this behavior by compensating older workers for the difference between severance payments and salaries in early retirement programs.

Consciously mirroring the title of Johan Huizinga's classic The Waning of the Middle Ages, this welcome addition to the Yale Intellectual History of the West series deconstructs European culture in the age of Cervantes, Montaigne and Galileo. Moving easily across national and disciplinary boundaries, Bouwsma (professor emeritus, UC Berkeley) challenges the assumption that we are direct heirs to the Renaissance. He argues with stunning clarity that the period from 1550 to 1640 was a phase of complex ambivalence, doubt and retreat, and that anxiety stimulated both cultural change and spectacular creativity. Along with the continuing Renaissance drive to destroy old barriers to understanding and human fulfillment came a countervailing concern that freedom had become absurd in excess, as suffocating as the overripe fruit of late-medieval culture, famously described by Huizinga. The imagery of disease, misbirth and disorder became pervasive, while a propensity to melancholy was fashionable in some circles. (Like a number of features of Bouwsma's argument, this has interesting implications for our own modern crises and depressions.) Nothing, people felt, was quite what it seemed; expectation and hypocrisy obscured the deeper self. There was, in short, "a profound set of discontents released by the peculiar freedoms of Renaissance culture." Out of these anxieties a craving for order emerged: a compulsion to categorize, an insistence on social boundaries and a growing attraction for mathematical certainties. Historians have conventionally viewed intellectual and artistic achievement as a seamless progression in a single direction, with the Renaissance, as identified by Jacob Burckhardt, as the root and foundation of modern culture. But in this brilliant new analysis William Bouwsma rethinks the accepted view, arguing that while the Renaissance had a beginning and, unquestionably, a climax, it also had an ending.Examining the careers of some of the greatest figures of the age-Montaigne, Galileo, Jonson, Descartes, Hooker, Shakespeare, and Cervantes among many others- Bouwsma perceives in their work a growing sense of doubt and anxiety about the modern world. He considers first those features of modern European culture generally associated with the traditional Renaissance, features which reached their climax in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. But even as the movements of the Renaissance gathered strength, simultaneous impulses operated in a contrary direction. Bouwsma identifies a growing concern with personal identity, shifts in the interests of major thinkers, a decline in confidence about the future, and a heightening of anxiety.Exploring the fluctuating and sometimes contradictory atmosphere in which Renaissance artists and thinkers operated, Bouwsma shows how the very liberation from old boundaries and modes of expression that characterized the Renaissance became itself increasingly stifling and destructive. By drawing attention to the waning of the Renaissance culture of freedom and creativity, Bouwsma offers a wholly new and intriguing interpretation of the place of the European Renaissance in modern culture.

Bacon and Montaigne Omelette

It is William Bouwsma's thesis that the Renaissance was not the budding spring of the modern age, but an organic era with a beginning and an end. Curiously, the forces given birth at the beginning of the era proved to be so frightening that the Renaissance players rushed to euthanize them. The Renaissance did not wane so much as it was dismantled, like an errant atomic bomb, by scientists overawed by their invention.
Bouwsma examines sixteenth century European thought in piecemeal-philosophy, theology, politics, science, literature, the theater-and with Newtonian precision describes how the adventuresome Renaissance spirit smashed molds of dated thinking and psychological ordering. Then, in reaction to its own recklessness, the Renaissance mind either retreated to old certainties rehabilitated or domesticated its inventions into a more tranquil conventionality.
Historical essays of this sort can make for delightful reading. Boorstin's "The Discoverers," for example, captures both the specificity and the poetry of scientific history. Bouwsma, unfortunately, errs on the side of specificity. The flow of the work reminds one of a lengthy receiving line where every great thinker gets a handshake and a bon mot, but soon it is time to move on to the next guest. This is not to say that some of the guests don't mingle excessively. The author has a warm spot in his heart for Shakespeare, Sarpi, Jonson, Hobbes, Hooker, Galileo, and in particular Bacon and Montaigne, who pop up dozens of times in the narrative. Regrettably, "pop up" is exactly what they do, to provide proof texts and anecdotal spicing. The reader who is not intimately familiar with Bacon, for example, will not get a significant taste of his thought.
This is most unfortunate, because I believe Bouwsma has at least scratched the surface of an interesting concept: the Renaissance as psychological event. From our vantage point the Renaissance looms as an unmitigated liberation. Bouwsma, on the other hand, implies that for every man who felt liberated, another felt terrified. The great irony is that frequently these were one and the same man, that few intellectuals were so dense as not to feel some fear at the rending of the medieval synthesis. There is no shortage of great Renaissance men in this work, but only a glimmer of their ambiguity.

A layman's reaction to a splendid but dense Book

This book is by no means easy to read. But a little persistence pays off handsomely. True enough one gets the impression that the author's own conclusions gets in the way of a more objective explication. Albeit the subject matter is dense as he tackles many very different dimensions of the Renaissance or rather the development of the Renaissance after its clear enough upwelling in the 15th Century in Italy then Europe. But the many strands are pinpointed and it is up to the reader somewhat to uphold or downplay this or that 'tendency'. Also he seems to rely on Hooker rather a lot but I cannot myself comment on the necessity or otherwise of that reliance. Personally I feel there has been too much specialization and therefore loss of appreciation of the broad movements and spectacular pitfalls in history but on the other hand it is not at all easy to characterize an Age without getting sufficient information of sufficient reliability as would require a fairly in-depth study. Bouwsma whets the appetite by the fairly numerous strands he delineates if only to rouse healthy and exciting skepticism.....

As one of America’s most notorious prisons, Alcatraz has been a significant part of California’s history for over 155 years. The small, lonely rock, known in sea charts by its Spanish name “Isla de los Alcatraces,” or “Island of Pelicans,” lay essentially dormant until the 1850s, when the military converted the island into a fortress to protect the booming San Francisco region. Alcatraz served as a pivotal military position until the early 20th century and in 1934 was converted into a federal penitentiary to house some of America’s most incorrigible prisoners. The penitentiary closed in 1963, and Alcatraz joined the National Park Service system in 1972. Since then, it has remained a popular attraction as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The book "A History of Alcatraz Island 1853-2008" by Gregory L. Wellman is fabulous. The photographs are numerous, as are the descriptions of the lives of the prisoners and those employed. It is written so you are pulled into every word, not just reading it, but feeling what it would have been like all those years ago. I suggest History of Alcatraz Island, 1853-2008 (Images of America: California) this book to everyone who enjoys history, or just interesting reading.

If you want to know about "the Rock" this is the book to read. It is very well done and really captures the history of Alcatraz.

Good read for Alcatraz buffs.

Very good information (with plenty of pictures) of the history of Alcatraz. I've always been interested in Alcatraz (have read some other books too) and found reading this book an easy read and really enjoyable. I finished reading it the same day I got it. Especially interesting to me was what had happened to all the buildings that were there when it was a prison. Many buildings are now gone and it's hard to even find photographs of the way it used to look. I had assumed the Indian occupiers burned them all down but now found out through reading this book that they burned down four of them (Wardens Home, Medical examiner, and lighthouse care person, and Social Hall) and the rest were torn down by the government after the Indians left. Torn down were the large Buildings A B and C near the Parade Grounds along with several bungoloes, the assoc Warden's home, and some others on the Parade Grounds. Such a shame to see the history gone. Taking a tour now reveals a shell of what it used to look like. Anyway, good read for those who are interested in Alcatraz history (I eat this stuff up). What I wouldn't give to spend a day on Alcatraz with Jolene Babyak (who lived on the island and wrote a book) to pick her brains about Alcatraz.

Superficial

Having ordered this book well in advance, I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a superficial effort as it was mainly written by general staff writers, not aviation historians. Each aircraft is described in just a single sentence. Anyone with a solid knowledge of aviation history will spot errors and inconsistencies with the dates used in the descriptions of many of the aircraft shown. However, the real issue that reveals the limited knowledge of the people who put the book together is the selection of aircraft for inclusion and the exclusion of others in each categorized section; some categories don't really make much sense. Why put different mission types of aircraft in one section that don't have much to do with each other? A 1950s section on bombers but with no Boeing B-52? The relative sizing of aircraft shown in each section also makes no sense at times. Why show the small Avro Anson many times the size of a large Boeing 314 flying boat? The choice of photo cut outs of some aircraft was a real screw up, particularly with commercial types. Why show a Fokker 100 with no engines? How bad can you mangle the cut out of a Grumman F-14? A decade by decade analysis of aircraft might make sense on the surface, but aviation technology does not advance exactly along those hard timelines. It appears that a limited picture library was used to source the book; a flaw for such an illustrated, "visual" book concept. Overall, a low-budget, mediocre-knowledge effort. Sad to see the Smithsonian name on it. I recommend other Smithsonian books instead: Flight: The Complete History by R. G. Grant; Air and Space: The National Air and Space Museum Story of Flight by Andrew Chaikin; or Milestones of Aviation edited by John T. Greenwood and Von Hardesty as alternatives.

Good for what it is

My husband was in the Air Force during Vietnam and also used his flying skill while in the police force. He has volunteered when a B-52 is brought in for display, leading tours and such. And he excitedly calls me into his man cave to listen to various planes on YouTube (between you and me, I can't tell the difference between any of them. They just sound loud.) I thought that this book would be of interest to him.

I know that some reviewers were disappointed that the book seemed to only deliver a couple of lines for some planes. I think that, as the title suggests, this is more of a visual history, rather than an in-depth guide to each plane that has ever existed.

The book itself is well-made and contains gorgeous full-color photography. If you have a mild interest in aviation, I think that this book is a great start for you. I guess I would call it the adult equivalent of a picture book. If you're looking for a book as a reference, this is not the book for you.

Awesome!

Very, very cool book. The DK publishing titles just keep getting better.

This is a visual history of aircraft broken up into chapters by decade.

There are a few things that make it unique and more interesting than just a book of profile shots of aircraft. In each chapter they will usually focus on a single aircraft in detail, and include a couple pages of "detail" photographs. This is visually interesting as you get maybe 20 small close up images of details of the aircraft (a pulley, fuel cap, throttle, instrument, logo, etc.) which together give a feel for the craft which you just would not get from even a series of whole-plane shots.

In addition to focusing on various iconic aircraft in this detail, another theme throughout the book is the history of the development of the aircraft engines that made these machines possible. Most chapters will pick out an iconic engine of the day and provide a two page spread talking about it in detail.

The third area of focus is on great aircraft companies throughout history and they pick out several and tell you about them in more detail.

Overall the images are varied and interesting beyond just the catalog of aircraft, and there are short side bars on topics like airport design, aircraft carriers, etc. but these lack the depth of the other focus areas and often seem to be an excuse to include a particular image that the editors liked.

Another reviewer complained about the lack of text in this book, but I found it to have a higher amount of information than many such "picture book" histories. But make no mistake, this is not a "history book for history buffs". It's a picture-book in the style of other books in the DK series and while the focus is clearly on the amazing imagery, DK has gotten very good at squeezing the maximum amount of information in as well, so the reader has the opportunity to learn a lot more than just what all these aircraft looked like.

Highly recommended.

The book (at least this hard bound edition) advertises "2 exclusive prints inside" and inside the back cover there is a pocket with two glossy A4 sized pictures on heavy card stock of the 1936 Spartan Executive and the 1972 McDonell Douglas F-15C Eagle, both in profile on a white background.
